Mk2 Shortshift

Discussion in 'Mechanical - Engine, Gearbox, Exhaust etc' started by toms, Oct 15, 2015.

1. Hi all,

Ive got an R26, recently fitted an engine dynamics short shift to it.

Its ok, but I dont think its as good as it could be.

Would my original shifter modified be better than an engine dynamics or not really?

2. I recently just fitted a Boardy shortshift and it's awesome!
How much was the engine dynamics one?

3. in what way mate? Took me a while to get used to

4. Hands down - as soon as you try one, you'll fall in love..

Same as the Ktec one in this vid mate:

20% of the price.....

5. Know problems with the engine dynamics ones

6. It's probably not got such a short throw as the home made ones

7. I've had both variants i had a phase 1 225 cup with the home made short shift and it feels stiff and tight and very short. Ive now got a phase 2 225 and went with the engine dynamics one. Its ok and is better than standard (thats not hard) but i think i know what you mean it feels a bit loose (hard to describe) but day to day its fine but not as good as the homemade one. The reason is due to it being too light for the phase 2. check out this post its spot on:

8. There's been quite a few complaints about the engine dynamics bit of kit being really notchy????

9. Have the boardy one for ages now and still inlove with it

10. haha think that was my old linkage before boardy modded it.

11. Whats a 'boardy' one ?

12. Member on here that does them mate

13. basically like the one andrew jeffs used to make

14. ah you mean from Lee in scunny ?

15. yes mate, great bit of kit and well priced ....

16. No Lee Boardman mate

17. yeah my mistake boardy from st Helens

18. Never heard of him ? Only down the road from me too

19. Just pm'd you mate

20. engine dynamics linkage is to light..this is why its notchy...the phase 2 linkage from 2005-on is a large peice of metal...for a reason.
It slows down the speed the mechanism moves so the gear selection can keep up.

The loss of weight makes the whole thing move to fast for the gear sync to keep up.

It will however be ok in earlier cars which have a much smaller linkage,as well as a modified actutor to cope with the smaller linkage.

stick to the tried and tested original method of machining the original linkage..

I stopped doing these, as per usual people had to take advantage of me not charging a big deposit and not bothering,or selling on exchange linkages, making it impossible to continue..

People will say..charge more money..but then it would make it ktec prices..

21. I'd like one of these too, how much are they?

22. pricey from ktec..but you do get the entire actuator set up..which will be tired on most meganesports by now..

23. I fitted the dynamics one to my R26 when I had it. I thought it was ok. The nylon inside the actuator can stiffen up which can also cause some vagueness. This stops the stick from returning to the centre. File this down, a bit of grease and this may improve the dynamics shifter if you're not happy with it.

24. this is why modding the original is the only option that's worth while...It really is a night and day difference to the standard shift....It is the number 1 mod for a 225/230.
If you have the money get the ktec item..its a direct copy of mine.It just sorts out the biggest weakness in the meganesport package..

25. Yeah, I think I will do that, my car has 60k on it now and so, although the ktec is more expensive I'm thinking its probably worth buying

26. you really wont regret it...and someone will probally buy your old linkage to soften the blow..people want them to mod into shortshifts..they are extremely hard to find 2nd hand..

27. contact boardy on here mate he mods them now and done mine last year and its an awesome mod, he will be way way cheaper than ktec.....

28. ktec are only expensive because you get the entire linkage/actuator mechanism..considering the unit costs £130 from Renault to buy..its actually quite good value..

29. Do you know the renault part number cheers

30. I could find out,as I used to buy a lot of them..best I got it for even with my trade discount was £122

31. ^ please if its not too much trouble Andrew

32. I have a standard one sat in my garage. I could send it to anyone for the cost of postage and a few beer tokens? It's of a Ph2.

33. I will have it off you mate, give us a PM with your details and I'm sure we can sort something out!

34. I've sent you a few messages but your inbox is full mate.

35. Yeah sorry mate I will clear some space now.

36. What's the best short shift option for the phase 1, I don't fancy the £238 from k-tec. Thanks

37. Thats the best option as it would give you the acuator of the phase 2 meganes as well - this part is £130 on its own from renault.

38. This is correct,as your actuator in a phase 1 will be getting tired by now.
The engine dynamics linkage will be fine in a phase 1 ,as it has a double spring actuator, that the phase 2 doesn't have.
Its far cheaper..but only fully compatible with the phase 1 cars

39. make sure the actuator moves freely in your hand when you remove it from the car..if its stiff,it needs a refurb...easy to do..do a search on here

see the double spring on the actuator on the right..this is to compensate for the very small phase 1 linkage arm..and the reason why engine dynamics linkages are to light for the single spring phase 2 item to keep up..hence the notchy change.
