Next best alternative to Akropovic for RS250?

Discussion in 'Mechanical - Engine, Gearbox, Exhaust etc' started by Lewis, Oct 20, 2015.

  1. As above, what's the next best thing? I do love the Akropovic but it's bloody expensive, at almost £2k!

If anyone has pics they could post too that would be appreciated. Thanks lads.

Remove one or both boxes and save the money.

  3. I had the mid box removed on mine. It's a great cheap upgrade

They all sound pretty much the same anyway, The F4RT is pretty shit sounding.

Most of them, yes, but not all (even though this one has been modded to hell and back)

I've been curious for some time to know what in the stock setup makes the megane RS sound as it does.

  6. I dont know buddy , you can get some very nice systems made up. Mine sounds well ..

its all subjective then i guess, IMO they sound wank even with a nice system.

That one posted, The DAR, sounds decent but then it would running a GTX with it being externally gated running a screamer and revving higher than normal.

  8. That video is superb mate

  9. Great video thanks for posting. That sounds fantastic. What's the mods? Funny it's only three seconds faster than the new type R! Makes you realise how good those cars are. I guess the CTR was driven by a professional racing car driver though to be fair.

So back on zorts. Is the Remus any good? It ain't cheap!

  10. It has 500hp, forged, tubular manifold etc

  11. Its the manifold

    Thanks MJ57. Makes sense.

  13. I think I'm going to bite the bullet and go with the slip on Akropovic. The one that retains the standard centre section and OEM mod box though.

  14. IMO this is pointless. Just getting the back box is going to make no difference whatsoever.

  15. I hear you, but noise and aesthetics though! I am tempted by the whole thing but it's another £300. I have thought this through though and did consider what you said. The thing is, the bore of the exhaust is the same too, so I can't really see how it can increase power? Also on the Akropovic website it claims that you will see a slight performance increase on both systems, even the 1500 one.

  16. The akropovic slip on is pretty pointless, especially for that kind of money. I doubt it'll give you much extra noise at all to be honest as the centre silencer is huge.

For the sake of £60-£80, get the centre silencer cut out and see what you think. If you still want more, then fit the Akro and without the centre silencer it might sound half decent.

  17. Thing is I don't want it as noisy as my Clio really, and that only has the slip on Akrapovic system!

On a tangent - Funnily enough, I looked at the RS website and the option of an AK system on a new RS Megane 275 is £2,500! It's cheaper to buy one and get it fitted than specify it as an option from factory.

As I said above, on the Akrapovic website it states there are gains to be had from both systems, even the slip on version. How can that be? I don't really understand how any exhaust system can give gains if the bore remains the same as OEM.

Be interesting to see some back to back dyno results.

  18. Also KTEC are essentially fitting it for free if I get it fitted when I buy the car, so less ball ache. I could do it myself but I cannot be assed really at the moment.

  19. More money then sense, the Megane engines aren't loud at all. I've got a decat with a back box chop it's and quiet compared to most cars with exhausts on.

  20. Seriously would save your funds and look for an alternative. The akra is well made no doubt but you won't transform the engine note to something like an AMG etc. I've heard the system and yes it's good but for a £60 mid box chop I've achieved the same result .

  21. Ok cheers for the input guys.

Will give it some thought. The Akra also looks better than OEM too, although I know you can get a carbon tailpipe for less. Just don't like doing a half arsed job.

So alls you have to do is cut out the mid box, there are no replacement pipes available to buy?

  22. Yes any decent garage should be able to do it, I used a long life garage in Basingstoke and for £60 they chopped out the middle silencer and welded in a new straight section. Superb job nice and quick and sounds perfect.

I'm sorry but anyone that actually buys the Akrapovic for the Megane as an aftermarket system is a mug. Unlike Akra systems for pretty much every other car that they make, IE Your clio, systems they don't sound any better than your normal systems

  24. I would go for a GT Performance titan. Sounds lovely imo

  25. Look like I may go SS with decat then

  26. I think most would disagree it clearly does sound different!

Have you heard it in person? Other than the extra pops it barely sounds any different to a stainless one.

Horses for courses though, if someone wants to waste close to 2k on a system when a 500 quid one does the same then crack on. I'll spend the money I've saved on driving it and trackdays.

  28. I've only heard the Akro on a very fresh car, the tone seemed quite different to my 250 less bassy and more mid/highs. It's still the same crap noise, just like someone adjusted the tone dials a bit on it but it's not worth 2k, think what mods/work you could do for 2k instead!

  29. are they full systems on the Trophy R, or slip on?

On the Clios the evo system was decat, so i presume the Meggy will be a slip on unit on the T?

  30. They're all cat back, the full Clio one is cat back too.

You have the option of buying cat back or mid-back.

Shouldn't have to decat to fit any of them.

  31. no, the Clio evolution deletes the secondary cat

Not really a decat though if you still have one in the system eh...

  33. It removes a cat, no? de cat...

    ?

  34. You boys be hatin'! Sheeeeet!

My Clio has a decat on it.

  35. Trophy/R system is a cat back so has no centre silencer and just the back box if I remember rightly?

Im I biased because I have a Trophy but from others I have heard you can definitely tell the difference. Also something a bit special having a titanium exhaust. In my opinion the back end benefits as well because the OEM chrome tail pipe surround doesn't look great.

However- it is a huge amount of money so I would be looking at it more whether it is worth it to you- how much is the car worth vs the exhaust and how long are you going to keep the car etc. would be a waste to spend 2k then sell the car 6 months later. If you are unsure there are loads of other options that get close: you need to be pretty committed to the idea to splash the cash!!

  36. A much more balanced and mature response, thank you mate! Yes it does look fantastic too but will give it some thought. The other lads have a point even though some of them have portrayed it in a slightly insulting manner!

  37. I'd personally love one, and have the same do it once do it right outlook.... :-)

  38. Amen to that. If you can afford it why not. Why spend close to £16k on a car then bitch about another grand for an exhaust. Doesn't matter really does it! I see what the lads are saying but it's the way in which the point is made. Lol I'll be unpopular here and I've only just joined
