250 WTF is this noise?

  1. Hi Semtax,

Did you get yours fixed and what was the problem?

I just picked up a RS250 cup with exact sound, after 2 weeks of ownership the sound has turned into a lod knocking noise like dry bearings.

As it seems to be quite common I want to take the route of getting it rebuilt.

Could you kindly advise what was required?

    Many Thanks

  3. It was the bearings in the gearbox like a mentioned. Getting the gearbox fully refurbished cured it 100%.

Mine never developed a knocking noise. It only got louder (Whirring noise).

The garage troubleshooting the problem first looked at all of the wheel bearings as well as the drive shaft bearings to make sure it wasnt them. That would be the best thing to do rather than going down the route of refurbishing the box straight away as it is a big and expensive job.

  4. Thread resurrection! I have a similar noise appeared over the last few days around 60mph regardless of gear or neutral - i'm guessing I have the same bearing issue.. :worried: Had my Gbox oil changed around 6months ago at Engine dynamics, so wondering whether I try my luck like @RHK3 with another oil change or just take it straight to the gbox specialists Currently at 55k miles what sort of miles were those in the thread at? @Semtax @Ben Eden .

  5. I had the same problem as the OP posted and had to have the gearbox replaced.

Noise increased with vehicle speed. Engine speed has no impact.

When this happens it’s drivetrain related (excluding engine) so could be gearbox, bearings, driveshafts etc.

I jacked the car up and had it running in gear to confirm it was the gearbox. I got my head under and could hear it coming directly from the gearbox.

It was suspected diff bearings, and so it was replaced with a new unit. You’d have to strip it down to confirm, which wasn’t done, but it was replaced under partial warranty with Renault. Still cost me £1400 and that was only 50% from memory.

  6. Sorry to bring this post back up, having the same issue in my 275, is this a common fault with meganes? I’m still under warrenty, so I presume the full cost with be covered by renault? Cause the car is only on 25k!

  7. Did warranty cover this for you? Mine has the same kind of issue (jack it up out of gear and when turning a tire you can really feel it clicking into gear. Makes a clonking noise when departing from zero and whines above 20 - 30 mph).
I have extended warranty on mine so in theory this should fall into warranty... Hope Renault will be kind (no decat, still on original panel filter, only mid box delete)

  8. Yes it got covered under warrenty, it was first diagnosed for a wheel bearing just by the noise the guy heard on the drive I took him (which I knew it wasn’t so I took it to another renault garage and they confirmed it was a gear box, 2.7k later which renault paid and new gearbox and the noise is gone!
Hope this helps (took roughly a week to fit because the part wasn’t stocked locally for me and roughly 9 hours of labour, I work in the motor trade so I can see the notes etc the mechanics put into the system for my car as the original dealership refused to give me any sort of information on it)

  9. Thx for the reply! At least gives me some peace of mind.
Have to wait till Monday to go to the dealer, hopefully everything goes smooth from then on...

  10. I need to have mine refurbished. I plan on selling my car but I wouldn't feel right selling it to someone with the whine.

Pain in the arse cos I need to get rid to free up some funds for impending fatherhood!

  11. Mine's getting a new gearbox under warranty... Sad you have to sell yours!

  12. I have a feeling if I fix it I will want to keep it. I love my Megane but its bloody annoying when it whines!.

I just need to find a decent place to do the work. No idea what price to expect for the work.

  13. I'm from Belgium, over here it's around 700 euro to overhaul a gearbox. But I've seen prices of about 1095£ in the UK for another gearbox with installation included... You could go to the dealer and ask for Renault to compensate a part. Sometimes if you stay on it for long enough they end up giving 80% reduction on the gearbox and the work. (At least that's what I found on another forum, no personal experience).

But once it stops whining, you're gonna want to keep it ;-)
