Broken Gearbox mount number 2

Discussion in 'Mechanical - Engine, Gearbox, Exhaust etc' started by darkant, Oct 15, 2015.

  1. 2nd time this has happened since January.

Gearbox mount bolt sheared on motorway this afternoon. This time the top bolt sheared(last time the bottom bolt). Both times under load

It appears this is an issue with additional Torque + original lower stabiliser mount.

Would highly recommend people upgrade the lower stabiliser as i have heard of a few casing of the gearbox cracking when it hits the subframe. So £130 + fitting could save a lot of hassle+£££ later on. I've ordered one to be fitted at the same time as the bolt.

I have a trackday booked for Monday, so drove the car today and yesterday to make sure all was well. Yesterday some idiot work-clown scratched it with a ladder and today the bolt sheared. Fortunately it sheared today rather than on or just before the track day!! My local specialist will have it back up and running tomorrow afternoon

  2. Which model have you got and are you fitting uprated bolts? I hear the mount was changed on 265's so wonder if they suffer the same problem

  3. Yeah, also would like to know which model you've got, I've got a 60 plate 250cup and think it's the one susceptible to this failing bolt.

  4. Mine is an 11 plate 2011 250 Cup
First time round it was not the uprated bolts. This time it defiantly was. The specialist that fitted them checked and ordered the correct uprated part directly from Renault.

  5. so you're saying that the top bolt that sheared, was the uprated item?

  6. as far as im aware renault never made an uprated bolt for this mount, they changed the whole mount design on the 265 onwards.

Can anyone provide more details on the differences between the 250s and 265s, part numbers etc...? I understand it is the lower bolt that most often shears?

  8. Yes the lower bolt is the one that most commonly snaps. I had a new bracket installed last time round. On this occasion it's the upper bolt

does it have any numbers on the head of the bolt? e.g. 8.8, 10.9 or 12.9

  10. 10.9 on the bolt heads.

This is how the lower mount looked:

The main rubber mount/insert moved forwards and backwards with relative ease.

  11. Uprate the rear mount, i put a vibra technics on mine. Takes a hell of alot movement out the engine. Or maybe you can get polybushes for the original?

  12. It now has the KTR lower mount on it.

  13. That will be a rebranded vibra technics one.

  14. Yeah i know i would have ordered the vibra as its slightly cheaper (including p+p), but k-tec got theres to my indy by 8am after ordering at 14:50 yesterday.

    use a 12.9

  16. No, thats the lower stabiliser bar, the one on top of the gearbox is the one. Bolts have know to snap. Renault did change the design afterwards.

  17. so they changed the design to lower the strain on the bolt? the mount is pretty basic as it is (dog bone with a 90 degree twist) so I wonder how they changed it? which bolt is it that snaps? the vertical one?

  18. The gearbox mount under the battery not the rear stabiliser bar (dog bone mount)
