175 DCI Driver side door checkstrap

Discussion in 'Electrical & Interior - Security, ICE, Wiring Loom' started by meganec, Jan 17, 2017.

  1. Yes I have the dreaded common fault of the door checkstrap clicking when opening the door.

My issue is I went to remove the checkstrap to replace but the nuts are just spinning round and not unscrewing [emoji51].

Has anybody got any advice on how I can get the bolts off as I just can't figure out the best way. Even tried pushing them from the back within the door but still not gripping the thread to undo.

    Any help appreciated

  2. If you have enough space to get to them then why not just cut the bolts off?

If the strap is the same as the one I've recently fitted to my MK3 then the bolts screw into a threaded section in the strap (i.e. there aren't any separate nuts.). If you cut the bolts off then you could get the old strap out and then just obtain two new bolts to fit to the new strap.

  3. Only way I can see to cut the bolts would be to cut a section of the door skin away to get to the bolts at the back. Cutting from the front would probably damage the door.

  4. I have a MK3 so I don’t know if there are any differences between the MK2 and 3 check-straps??

On the MK3 the bolts pass from outside through the door-frame and screw into the checkstrap inside the door, as they are tightened up the check-strap is held against the inside edge of the door-frame. Therefore cutting the bolts off outside of the door would just let the check-strap fall into the inside of the door – which is what you want to happen, only issue is that you would have to replace the bolts, but if they are just spinning around then it’s unlikely you will be able to get them out without cutting them out.

Depending on how much of the bolt thread you can see you could either cut the bolt off somewhere along its threaded length or if you can’t see any of the thread you could just massacre the bolt head until it’s all removed.

  5. Why not post some photos, would be easier to see if the check-straps are the same.

  6. I'll send a picture but I think only way is to try and destroy the bolt head as much as I can without damaging the door itself.

  7. That’s what I would do. If you don’t have a Dremmel I’d definitely recommend getting one, then just take your time and do lots of cuts (using a metal cutting disc) at different positions, 12 o’ clock, 3 o’ clock, 6 o’ clock ect, the head will soon become weak and it will separate from the threaded shaft of the bolt. You will only need to cut into the centre part of the head that’s attached to the shaft so hopefully wont actually start cutting into the door underneath (imagine just cutting the yolk in the middle of a fried-egg.)
