Fitting a 250 turbo on an R26 - is it worth it?

Discussion in 'Mechanical - Engine, Gearbox, Exhaust etc' started by Somnambulist, Dec 5, 2016.

  1. So I've just bought an R26 and I'm looking at the options for more power. Has anyone on here fitted a 250 turbo to theirs? Is it straight forward to do and would you say it's worth it for power gains above what can be achieved with a standard R26 turbo? Thanks!

  2. depends what you want really, most people tend to go for, decat / sports cat, bigger injectors, intercooler, exhaust and that gets around 290/300 bhp and 300 lbs.

the 250 turbo is meant to pull alot harder than the standard one, just bear in mind unless you forge the engine its risky going over 300/300 so a bigger turbo is kinda limited in its uses.

its a direct swap, so it is meant to be fairly easy to do,

  3. Hybrid turbo on my last 265 was not worth the money.
It never pulled harder to red line and it rattled bolts loose twice after k teq fitted it.
My Advise would be leave the oem one on and just enjoy the car.

Funny, Mine makes its power all the way to the redline now and drives a lot nicer than it did on the stock turbo.

I am on an RST spec one mind you.

  5. Cheers all! Might have a chat with Paul at RST as it's likely I'll take the car to him for tuning. Obviously 300bhp/ft lb are the magic numbers, but I'm not going to be forging the engine so might be sensible to stick with the standard turbo and go for lower more reliable figures.

  6. if you do anything get the short shift mod, pm boardy on here to get one sorted

  7. 250 turbo is definately worth it! 300+/300 are realistic figures with supporting mods

  8. You won't hit 300bhp on the standard turbo, 290 at a push with a strong engine and all the mods, 280 realistically

  9. That's why i said, 250 turbo.... although you CAN get 300bhp with the standard turbo, just need the 250 wastegate actuator as the standard 0,4bar actuator simply is too weak!

  10. Cheers all! I'll be doing most of the supporting mods, and will weigh up closer to the time if the turbo is worth the risk of the engine going pop. Will see what Paul at RST advises too!

Pretty sure the car already has a short shifter fitted as it feels much tighter than another car I drove. Will take a look!

  11. I have the 250 turbo. Best bhp/£ you'll get.
Mine made 300/300 no problems with really low boost.
Paul didn't tell me what it made in first run he just said he better dial it back

  12. Well when you put it like that... There was one on eBay t'other day for £250 with 16k miles on it, so they're pretty reasonable to buy used!

  13. I was referring further up the thread where someone said, exhaust / fmic/ injectors will give about 300bhp.
Personally I've never seen a standard turbo make 300bhp! Only around 280/290 at a push with far too much torque for standard internals!

  14. If your worried about the engine going pop, don't touch it. Mine went pop on 46K ish on a mostly standard stage 1!

  15. Tbh, torque is totally independant of power, you could make 270lb/ft and still manage 310bhp

I agree on the standard turbo though, you absolutely won't make more than 290bhp with the standard wastegate actuator

  16. Just do it. Mine pulls really hard all over the rev range one of the best mods I've done.

  17. Yes but how many cars do you know that are mapped to have a completely flat torque curve from 2.5K rpm to 6K?

It doesn't happen in reality, as your not mapping the car to use the potential of the turbo. and if your making 270lbs at 6K rpm odds are it's making more at lower rpm's.

All I was trying to say was the only cars I have seen that have been 280+ on the standard turbo we're the early stage 2's that rstuning did that were in excess of 300lbs/ ft.

It's certainly interesting regarding the fact you say a standard turbo can make 300bhp. With an upgraded actuator.

Personally Ive never seen it even on cars with upgraded actuators injectors etc etc. I was always under the impression that it wouldn't flow enough.

  18. I have to echo Chris's comments. I've got one on my r26 (still standard map) and it pulls stronger higher up the rev range.

Tbh I'd say it's just as quick as my old engine that had a stage 1 map on the standard turbo.

It doesn't pull as hard as low down, as the stage 1 but I'd say it pulls stronger higher in the revs.

  19. I have a 250 turbo on the race car with a RSTuning map made 317hp and 330 torque irc have the graph at home it is a different car pulls right the way through though that is more to do with the mapping! All depends the reason why you are doing it! For me it was to stay competitive but as a daily is it worth it?? Hell yeah! You will need bigger injectors and a decent remap though RSTuning all the way!

  20. Cheers all! Really appreciate all the feedback, good to see that there's a few of you running them too.

@Mattyt I'm guessing you're running forged internals? I was planning on fitting 630cc injectors anyway (or getting Paul at RST to anyway when mapping) so no worries there. Just need the money now to get on with it but probably won't all happen until well into next year I doubt.

Exhaust system and intake are first performance mods on the list  Also, I'm guessing that R26 decat pipes and intake pipes still fit the 250 turbo? Or do you have to use 250 fittings or modify R26 fittings?

  21. I've got the decat, 630 injectors, 2.75 k tek exhaust, k tek induction kit and an airtec front mount, I took it to Paul at rs tuning and managed 291bhp and similar torque can't remember the exact torque but he said he had rained in in a bit. Like you I've considered the 250 turbo but the car feels so on the money at the moment I'm not sure if it's worth changing. I'm not planning on forging the engine either so the risk seems to much for me but if it did go pop then it would be a good excuse. I'd do all the supporting mods first and see how the car feels, I'm sure you'll be pleasantly surprised.

  22. You don't see it when the bottom end is strong enough for the torque but the turbo isn't able to flow enough at the topend. You do see it alot on VAGs with upgraded turbochargers but standard bottom end.

The difference between 14t(225) and 15t(250) is small really, it is possible but you'll be blowing alot of hot air which the intercooler has to make up for. Tbh, even the 15t is outside of it's map range with power levels of 320bhp, hence why you'll only make it with intercooler, downpipe, exhaust etc.

Paul has managed 352bhp on a hybrid turbo with standard 250 intercooler, that's because the compressor is still well within it's efficiency range.

  23. Say you just wanted around 280/290bhp, would a 250 turbo and remap alone get you roughly there easier rather than spending on exhaust, Intercooler, decat, injectors and remap?

  24. Don't think it has been tried before tbh

  25. M3rs had 14t like 225 and 15t.. i dont know why.

  26. Exhaust with decat & remap see's 274bhp/280lb/ft
(but that's on a liquid yellow, which are more powerful anyway :tonguewink:...)

Problem on the mk2 is the rubbish stock intercooler, Paul will tell you about this, he told me to upgrade it just on a stage 1 if used on track a lot regardless of needing it to go further. Personally I am happy with about 260 Bhp / 275 lb/ft as it suits the car perfectly.

  28. Don't know what you're trying to say here but the 225 has a td04l-14t and the 250 has a td04l-15t

  29. Yes forged internals [emoji16]

  30. Not all. Belive me

  31. where does that wisdom come from?

  32. I believe upgrade intercooler, intake, injectors and exhaust before you bother going 250 turbo route as you will need these to see the real benefits! Don't get me wrong you would see an improvement but it's like running slick tyres on a standard suspension!

  33. I asked Paul that when I did mine and he said he would not do it, the standard exhaust and cat is to restrictive or something along those lines.
