New RenaultSport Megane

  1. I would never choose my next car based purely on its badge. I choose a car based on feel rather than just marketing and brand loyalty.

  2. My own opinion as I’m looking around for a new car is one of slight disappointment. Personally, after the 265 I want a bigger step up in performance while staying affordable. It looks a lot nicer than I thought it would, sounds nice in the videos I’ve seen and would certainly like to give it a drive to try the handling. But the feb/march seems a long time away, even longer knowing the 300bhp trophy is coming later. With those figures, BHP vs weight I fail to see how it’s going to impress that much?

The M2/RS3/AMG cars with options and tax are a little to lumpy (expensive) for my wallet, the Honda is too ‘boy racer' for me these days, VW’s, Kia’s, Hyundai, Vauxhall don’t seem to have the handling. The ford RS to me seems a serious contender for my money, only thing making me nervous about it are the engine issue.

  3. I forget who and where but I saw a Focus owner who'd had the mk2 and mk3, sounded like he was quite disappointed with the new one simply because it's so heavy. 4wd is great up to a certain point but the extra weight gives you a pretty big penalty in every other area outside of traction.

I think the engine issue was just an early car thing from what I saw?

Shame they don't put the same tune of engine in the Mustang imo now that could be fun

  4. I went from a Mk3 250 cup mapped to 285 to a 280 Leon to a Mk3 Rs Focus, cant say ive noticed the weight on the road, and ive not and wont be tracking it. It gives the same feeling as in fun to drive as my Megane did, and has the Leon beat hands down, but then so did the Megane.

  5. Another promo from Renault, that sound :fearscream:

  6. See now that makes me want one !!!

  7. Looking forward to seeing it in different colours. Will look seriously mean in black!

When are we likely to start seeing proper road/track reviews of the car?

  8. Apparently around Feb 2018

  9. About time Renault made a return to the BTCC..
Remember the wonderful days of the Williams Renault Lagunas?

BTCC is now almost as good as it was back then, with virtually every major car brand involved.
would certainly help to get exposure for the new car, out to the public.

I'm 100% getting one now in 2 years I've decided. And I'll try them both but I really fancy the EDC, those shifts sounded pretty nippy!

  11. has it ben confirmed that the EDC version wont have an LSD ?

  12. I have to admit the more I see it the more I like it. Looks really nice. Renault always do fairly well with styling, good mix of aggressiveness and subtlety. The cup version looks badass!

  13. It's growing on me a bit, I still can't see me getting one but I think off the bat it's a better looking car. Though I never really liked the mk3's looks and ended up buying one (stick-on wheel arches always bugged me)....

If I have one criticism just from the looks, it's a similar criticism I have with the mk3 that's a bit boring for some of you track day goers I'm sure :tongueout: but, the central exhaust.

It appears this raises the boot lip on cars a fair bit, due to having to package the numberplate and diffuser into the same vertical space. It makes the boot harder to load and less practical.
It's not a massive difference but if you compare it to even a Golf R the boot lip is quite a bit lower and it makes loading the boot a lot easier and you can fit things in better.

I know.... boring and grown up complaint on a hot hatch but I'm a one car guy and mines been used for track days and tip runs so these things matter

I am actually looking forward to see the reviews though, I hope to hell it does well.

  14. I think the looks are fine. No RS Megane has ever been a looker, but thats all down to the eye of the beholder and all that stuff. For me it has to be the trophy version and not the 'nearly' car that is being introduced first. Potentially over another year down the line means that I'll probably be in something else by then, although more than likely something else by Xmas and I'll look and see how the Mk4 is shaping up once I get bored of whatever I buy next.

  15. This is totally stupid I know, but it's not the looks of a 5-door that get me... it's the fact that you nearly always have that bit of body-coloured metal visible at the door pillar...

    metalyellow.jpg

Pillarless doors definitely have their own issues, but I much prefer them!

  16. yes (it wont) only the manual, Jeremy @ RUK confirmed this morning to me. Not sure how I feel about that though with an 'electro' diff version. Will need to see the reviews of the handling specifically on the EDC version.

That said, Recaros due by Sept 18.

I was hoping deliveries of the Trophy started in Dec 18 instead of orders, Jeremy wasn't entirely clear he said 'Again, we haven't said a month, first deliveries will be in the autumn too' which suggests even earlier than Dec, I think it might be a typo though and he might mean 280 + recaros = autumn deliveries

  17. Shame, all the VAG cars that come with the VAQ diff offer it in manual and DSG versions. Missing a trick there already.

  18. VAG zzzzzzzzzzzzz.

    Lol, don't be so blinkered.

The current gen of fast VAG fwd stuff is brilliant, the VAQ diff is like witchcraft. Hopefully Renaultsport can match up to them with the MK4

  20. Up until I got my Cup-S I've been away from Renaultsport for a number of years and tried a number of apparent top quality VAG products and was left numb by all.
However haven't driven the Clubsport, which does sound like it perhaps bucks that trend. Doubt I'd ever consider one over my Cup-S though.

I'd probably take one of the VAG products over a Megane if i were in the market for a new Hot Hatch. For now anyway til the MK4 actually hits the roads.

  22. I gave mine a right hammering today, I just love it. Goes like stink and just sticks to he road with the cup 2 tyres it's savage [emoji1598]

Re looks, I used to despise the mk3 megane then it grew on me hugely. I am sure in a few months there will be some opinion changes on here lol!

  23. Faith restored. Google translate:

AS: What can make the difference is that if you want a Cup chassis, you need the manual gearbox ...
RSC: Not necessarily! This is one of the strengths of the new generation. The EDC box will be available on both chassis. To be precise, there is a small commercial gap on the commercial launch of the EDC box chassis Cup (offered in a few weeks). The EDC box will have the differential.

    AS: The Torsen?
    RSC: Yes.

RSC is Grégoire Ginet, product manager Megane RS and the second with Patrice Ratti, Managing Director of RSC.

So basically, don't order a launch car lol.

LSD to come on the EDC
    Recaros to come
    Trophy to come

  24. Boo....

It should be noted that the weight shown in Frankfurt on the Megane RS 280 EDC (1505 kg) is not the curb weight in running order of the Renault catalogs. This is the EU weight, including the driver and 5 kg of luggage, or an additional 75 kg on the DIN weight. The comparison with the Mégane 3 is therefore at the moment biased, although it is obvious that the news will be heavier than its predecessor.

Not massively heavier then even with the addition of 4 doors and RWS

  26. I like how you get peak torque by 2400rpm, was 3500rpm on the mk3 right? And peak power 6000 instead of 5500 with a 7k rev limit will be decent

  27. Back from Frankfurt.

Car looks fantastic, the diffuser on the rear is great and it looks wide. Exhaust exit is about 25% larger than the mk3. Love the 197 esque vents on the front wings too. Front lights and DRLs look great, marmite but I love them.

Rear spoiler looks reserved in the photos and whilst it doesn't have the 'flick' like the 265 spoiler it is bigger in person than it looks.

Might have been the lighting but the massive Renault diamond on the front wasn't traditional chrome it was like a dark metallic that blended into the gloss black around it - I.e didn't stick out much!

Same brembos as the mk3, discs look a bit bigger. Launch spec alloys look decent actually, RS logo on the alloy itself vs the centre cap on the mk3 which now just has a Renault diamond.

My main issue is the paddles. Why oh why still them on the column and not on the wheel itself? If you steer right and want to shift up, you can't reach them. Same with steering left and shifting down. Granted you hope to shift most when you are in a straight line but even then, the paddles are from 9 to 11 o'clock left and 1 to 3 o'clock on the right i.e if you are driving with hands at 9 and 3pm, you are touching the very bottom of the paddle. I'll need to drive one properly to decide but that might sway me to the manual instead.
I'm not expert but all the porsches, mercs, bm's I sat in a Frankfurt had paddles on the wheel at 9&3pm. Fancied the EDC too.

  28. Nice.

So you mean all the porkers etc had the same style paddles as the megane or on the steering wheel itself?[emoji848]

  29. No they all had paddles on the steering wheel which makes sense as then you can reach them at any steering angle

  30. The white cars side skirts look extended downwards, a trick to try and keep the air that is under the car from coming out the side before it's accelerated by the diffuser. Also the silver car is using a lot more curb than you would for a development session, that chap is trying!

  31. thats one ugly, bland car..the bloody hyundai looks nicer!

  32. I think it would've looked neater as a three door or at least they should have concealed that rear handle like they've done on the clio. God I fucking detest five door cars they look so fucking clunky and heinous.

  33. its such a shame cars all seem to look identical now, what happened to french flair!

  34. I beg to differ

  35. I can understand why people are saying from certain angles it’s not the greatest looking car......... but that looks epic !!

  36. the only nice bit is the mk3-esk front blade and clever driving/fog light arrangement.
ridiculous even bigger over sized badge, and bizarre question mark lights make me cringe.

We have a GT in our village..just blends into the crowd.

Still,if its class leading, all will be forgotten.
