250 Super Sports vs Pilot Sport 4

Discussion in 'Suspension, Brakes, Wheels & Tyres section' started by jack250, Feb 21, 2017.

  1. Looking for a comparison for these two tyres from people who have gone from the PSS to the PS4 please chaps.

Finding it difficult to get any info on the PS4 so feedback would be great. Cheers

  2. I've run both on road (but no track work) and can feel no appreciable difference between the two - both the dry and wet grip are equally awesome for both.

  3. Cheers mate. Just as much feel through the steering and similar grip in the dry?

PS4's feel miles better IME, Pretty much the same levels of grip in wet and dry as well. PSS slightly edges it in the dry on track, but unless you can drive the car at its limit to get every tenth out it you wont notice any difference.

  5. I will probably only do 2 tackdays this year. I've got a trip planned to scotland and to the alps so an all rounder is better suited for me. The PSS has been great, i would just hate to lose some of the performance when i change the tyres, its been superb. Other option is stick 245's PSS stay with the same tyre...

  6. I really wouldn't use road tyres on track, even for 1 day. You have to manage the heat so carefully that it spoils the experience for me.

  7. I used the PSS at Anglesey last year and they were sound. It rained in the afternoon which would've helped I suppose but they were great none the less

  8. to add.. I can't afford 2 sets of wheels so that idea is out of the window. Cup 2's are an option, just don't want it to be undrivable in anything but dry conditions

  9. Fair enough. I find my NS2Rs very driveable in the wet though and make a track soooo much more enjoyable.

  10. I have gone from pss to ps4 and I cant tell much difference between the 2 on the road..so don't worry about a drop off in performance.

I don't think you can ever go wrong with a Michelin tyre for road use..i have used them since my old RS Turbo days!

I remember when the pilot sport first came out in the 90`s...it was night and day difference in grip and turn in...I can still remember hitting that first corner and being shocked at the performance jump from the previous Michelin mxv`s!

  11. Yeah this is why I'm so adamant about sticking with Michelin. I can't fault them one bit. After various different brands over the years it's the michelins that stand out most. Should maybe stop being such a tyre tart and consider something else i.e. NS2r or similar

  12. I am being such a pest, sorry !!! If I had to choose a road tyre for the track the only brand I wouldn't choose is Michelin (apart from the Cup2s). Although I understand the PS4 has stiffer sidewalls than the SS, but that's not saying much.

I'd probably go for a Yokohama Advan 105.

  13. how good are they in all weather road conditions though?...if the OP is only doing 2 track days a year,99% of his driving will be on our shite roads.

If you do want a change...I know many a track day guy that uses yoki AD08R..and rave about there all round useability..

  14. PS4 is better all round tyre than Super Sport, you deffo won't feel let down after running SS

  15. Yes Andrew, tricky to find a do it all tyre indeed - the Yoki AD08R is very good but quite a lot more expensive than the Nankang and not drastically better (and sadly not in the right load rating for the Megane). The market seems to have accepted that, yesterday at Silverstone the guys selling tyres only did Nankang and Federal.

  16. It's a very tough decision. I've made up my mind on the brand front..Michelin it is. In terms on which one it's definitely between the PS4 and the super sport. Do I stick to PSS or or go with the new tyre?! But to go PSS would mean a change in size. Does anyone have any experience with a 245 section tyre on the standard rim? A picture would be great too. I don't want to go down a size (225) as I've had these on before and they made the wheels look small.

245 pss are not ideal on stock wheels, even more sidewall flex.

Honestly just get PS4s, your making this a lot harder than it should be [emoji23]

  18. Haha c'mon Jamie you know this is a hard decision!! If I'm paying nearly £500 on something that has a huge impact on the car they've gottta be bang on

Your choosing between to very, very similar tyres that are both good.

PSS is finished now, get PS4s or wait for an undetermined time and get some 4S'

  20. I am putting new pads and discs on my Megane tomorrow then the next purchase will be some Pilot Sport 4s . All reviews hail them as being the best tyre on the market so I figure I'll give them a go.

Will replace my fronts with them in 235/35/19 for about £185 per tyre.

Look forward to seeing how they perform.

  21. I paid just under £170 from Tyreleader in that size

  22. Ah nice. Was that fitted?

  23. Oh and if anyone is interested these are interest free for 6 months on black circles. Tempted to buy a full set.

  24. Tyres on finance? One learns something new every day.

  25. I personally have never used finance for tyres but saw the promotion on black circles and I guess it takes the edge off spending near 800 quid

  26. Need to arrange fitting, the company is based in Germany. Their prices go up and down daily so you may be able to get them cheaper

  27. The cost of fitting is likely to be £10 a tyre so I think black circles will work out similar price with cashback.

  28. wow,you know your stuff mate...very interesting.

AD08Rs can be had for around 220 a pair in 235/45/18 if you know where to look. Better tyre than NS-2R and RS-R in my experience

  30. 235/45?

  33. Good choice, won't be disappointed, just waiting to try the dual compound PS4 S. Michelin realy are way out front from rest of players in tyre development these last few years

  35. Will do mate

  36. now weathers drying should be able to lean on tyres much harder and get good feedback

  37. It never dries up North mate!

  38. Which is frustrating as some best roads are located north England and Scotland

  39. I drive them regularly. Let's hope these PS4's are up to the task. I enjoy driving in the wet. Suppose you learn to up here haha

  40. Yes we also enjoy the wet drives and are reg visitors to Wales come what may, this also make us passed masters in tyre technology and have learned a hell of lot in passed 10years and more on all types road and track, same goes for brake technology, all while having huge amount fun
