I’ve still not got to the bottom of my vague steering problems with my 2004 225 and can now only narrow it down the steering column universal joint. It was only when Mark Black said that the UJ was different did I look into it. It looks like that at some point Renault have changed the UJ design from incorporating a rubber joint to then removing it altogether. (see pics) This isn’t just on the RS range, I think it was across the board for the mk2 range. Seeing as rubber bushes etc fail after a few years, this could be the reason for the vague steering and slow/sluggish reactions around dead centre – if it is, then this could explain lots of poor steering feel on the earlier models. Does anyone have any experience of removing/replacing just the UJ? It looks like it should be as simple as removing the lower bolt under the pedals then the bolt at the column end and drop it out downwards. Hopefully I’m not looking at ripping out the entire steering column for this, or needing access from under the car by removing the sub-frame. Any help greatly appreciated with this gents…
Hi Rob, did you get any further with this? Manage to Change the universal joint? I have the same feeling on mine, has steering rack replaced, springs, struts, drop links the lot. only 4 things remaining that I can think that might have some impact; driveshaft, cv joints, uj joint and finally the steering column. thanks.
I recently solved a similar issue by replacing the UJ on a customers SAAB.. It will surprise you how little play makes a difference
Ta mate, I will have a look into it today, steering just feels a little sloppy, can quite easily float from left to right, rack everything else has been done on my car, so can't put it down to that.
Quick question, I got the UJ out the car today, one end is very smooth in it's turns and will make no noise or notchy movement at all(bottom end that goes into rack), the other side (top side) is very notchy and isn't smooth, normal? reason why I ask is I have slop...
