If its was a mk2 then i could tell you, don't had to do it on the mk3

The mk2 you need to undo the cables from the handbrake end and pull them out through a steel tube in the chassis, they can get jammed due to dirt and shit in the tube.

  5. Sorry never changed that cable or see one fail, what happened with yours just out of interest

  6. failed MOT 50% of the required value, I've tried adjusting it but its at the end of the thread now so i presume its stretched to maximum :worried:

  7. sorry to butt in but that handbrake cable was on the way out when I sold it over 5 years ago , surprised it lasted so long as I always had to pull it up to max to hold on my sloped driveway. afraid I can't help with the fitting though but nice to see it's still going strong

  10. Hi Mate, how did you get on with replacing the handbrake cable. Im thinking of replacing mine. It went through the MOT yesterday fine. No advisories, however due to the bitter frost we have at the moment the handbrake won't release. When it first happened on thursday, I called RAC. The Technician said it most likely caused but moisture getting inside the cable sheath and freezing solid. This was confirmed later as the handbrake was fine once the weather warmed up in the day. Last night it froze again and once again the HB was stuck but not as much. So been searching cable prices etc and came across this thread. As wanted to replace it myself. Any info on fitting etc.

  11. Well i managed to do it myself but what a pain, had to remove the carpets behind the front seats to get to two steel tube sheaths that your cable runs through and mine where rusted right in the middle so i couldnt pull my old cable out, i had to gradually do it with putting WD40 down the tube and kept pushing and pulling the cable back and forth till it came loose, must have took me a good 90mins for just that part. Everything after that was straight forward now it seems to be ok and went through the MOT just fine
