250 Occasional 1st gear problems? Nae luck.

  1. Okay so really don't seem to be having much luck at all recently haha. When my car was in for changing the belts they noticed my clutch pipe to be leaking pretty bad. This was replaced and I thought it could be the cause of said problem in the title. But I still seem to be getting this as sometimes I'm sitting at lights and when I go to move off it takes 2 or 3 attempts to get into first..

it doesn't happen all the time, but I think it's happening more.. So the car has been sitting untouched for a bit (I'm on call at work anyway and using the work van) I'm also getting slight vibration at idle with some clunking noises, but disappears completely under load...

What could be causing this?? I'm planning to get it in and get the engine and gearbox mounts checked, I use Rentec in Edinburgh.

I just want to be able to enjoy my car! One thing after another:worried:

  2. First simple thing to check is that your driver side floor mat hasn't slipped forward and under the clutch pedal stopping the clutch peddle from going down all the way, I say this as this happens to me sometimes.

  3. Just checked this, the clutch pedal doesnt go down far enough to come in contact with the mat. Must be different on the r26.

Gutted haha. Thought it couldve been that when you suggested it there..

  4. How often? I've had it do this, but in nearly 2 years it's done it maybe at most a hand full of times even if that and generally attributed to it still being cold and me block shifting/ coasting in neutral but easily sorted by slotting it into another gear and going back to 1st.

  5. It could be just a coincidence, I have to say it is usually when it's cold. Every time being when stationary and sitting in traffic. So maybe just me being paranoid haha.. I've only had the car since October though and it's done it 2 or 3 times recently that I can remember clearly.

I definitely think it could be an engine mount though because I done a bit of research on this vibration on startup and knocking noise, but disappears if I give it a little blip of throttle.. Odd thing is it only does it for first 5-10 seconds or so the car is sitting running. It goes super smooth after this and during ordinary driving.

Anyway car is going into Rentec tomorrow to have the mounts checked out and my plugs that have finally arrived fitted haha. Woohoo..

  6. I've not long since spoken to Brian at rentec about similar issues mate. My clutch pipe seems to be leaking after noticing residue around the gearbox mount but initially thought the mount may be knackered, mines under warranty so Brian advised to use it and get it checked.
Since I got my 250 it's given a little rattling noise under change or blipped it and I noticed the plastic pipe that goes into the bulkhead from the recirc valve shakes about, I squeezed a wee bit of silicone pipe between the pipe and the hole in bulkhead to cushion the noise. Stopped it completely!

Still needs the bloody clutch pipe doing though

  7. Weird how we're having such similar problems.. They said the mounts on my car were absolutely fine, but I am also experiencing a sort of rattle.

Not so much when i change gear, but if im crawling along slowly and i blip the throttlw with the window down i can hear a sort of tinny rattle. Sounds like a loose heatshield somewhere tbh but weird they haven't picked this up the past times my car has been in and drove it about to hear these noises i've been reporting back to them.

Its one of those things they'd probably notice and just fix it for you. They're really good like that. So i'm wondering if this is the same problem you are having. If you do get it in mate give me a shout back and tell me what they find.

    Would be much appreciated:smiley:

  8. What you've just described isn't what I was talking about, it's a plasticy noise I meant but what you're on about say slowly coasting in first or second where more torque goes through the mounts and blip the throttle with the window open I can hear a slight bang/knock, there is a lot of movement in these mounts for some reason, I've always thought mine were on their way out but been assured they're fine.
I'm gonna take the battery out sometime and check further cause I've read lots about the fixings the bolt the gearbox mount to the chassis can snap, possibly one of them.
It'll be a couple of weeks before I can get it into Renault but I'll definitely keep you posted, likewise let me know what Rentec say on the matter :-)

  9. have you tried bleeding the clutch again? Concentric slaves can be a real prick to bleed. Not sure what the workshop manual procedure says but if you want, follow the procedure for a late model Corvette or 370z. I used to have a 370z and it was actually pretty easy to bleed. All i did was loosen the bleeder and let it ooze for a few mins (keep reservoir topped up), then vacuum bled it a few times. Didnt even need an assistant! But the Nissan manual did advise against using power bleeders or vacuum bleeders...
