I'd be interested in a little comparrision between the Megane and your old Golf if you've got the time. No i'm not planning on getting a Golf, just interested in comparisons. I've not driven one but most of the reviews mirror what you're saying and they're a bit too sensible for me. I don't need the practicality either so I'll be looking at something like a Cayman next. If I was buying the Trophy again, I would seriously look at a 3 door Cupra 290 though.
Brake pads are a good shout - weakest part of the car and will seem poor compared to the SEAT. Not sure the filter is worth anything and have no experience of the short shifter but many people rave about it on the mk2's.
I can only really see the short shifter making a difference if you had a claim that was gearbox related (not unknown with Renaults). The other items shouldn't make a difference but you never know. Personally I don't think they need much in the way of modification, with the exception of the front pads, if you're not tracking them that is.
