Hello all, I have just joined the forum, I have a new job working offshore and now have plenty of time off and need something to fill my weekdays with, I'm looking/thinking of buying a megane sport as a project to use as a weekend fun/track use, I plan to get it something similar the R26R (without the price tag) regarding no rear seats, Roll cage, Bucket seats, strip the interior and a remap with exhaust (or what is required to achieve 250ish BHP). Light weight, good handling and decent power is my aim. I have a mate who is a GRP and carbon specialist so plan to get some panels made up in carbon, firstly the bonnet, Spoiler and boot lid which once fitted he will more then likely reproduce for sales. I have a couple of questions for you guys, 1) What are the differences in the 225, 230 and the R26 model (other then the 5bhp) 2) Suspension advice - coilover recommendations and rough prices 3) To achieve 250bhp what is usually required (I live 30 miles from Leeds so RS tuning is close by) My budget is not massive but looking at a car of around 4k and maybe another 2kish to spend (Will more then likely go up) Thanks in advance, Aaron
Hi mate welcome If your wanting an R26R without the pricetag then the R26 is the prime choice. The difference of the R26 over the 225, 225 cup is the limited slip differential which makes a massive impact on the quality of the handling. As for modding it a- stage 1 remap will give power output of around 260bhp. Si
R26 has recaros to so no jeed to get real buckets unless you want lightweight ones i think just of a map you will get close to 270 with no other mods
The R26, has better rear brakes, bigger master cylinder, bigger ARB's ,cross drilled discs/ red calipers, can actually turn the ESP off and it stays off above 30mph, stiffer suspension(A few of these are the same as cup packed cars) and the all important LSD, different wheels/ recaro's, the R26 had a different exhaust also for a more "sportier" note. Think i remember reading somewhere that the R26 is polybushed as standard also (but may have dreamt that!) I'm sure there's somethings i've missed out that someone else will come along and chip in with
Although for 4k i think you will really struggle to find an r26 they seem to be around 6-8k depending on spec mileage etc.... Seen a few trophy's go for around that though
Oh the steering weight is set differently on a R26 too (heavier from what i remember) but this can be changed with an RStuner / clip and no TPMS on an R26 either
Thanks for the quick response guys, I will take a look at the R26 as didn't know it had a LSD, I will adjust the budget lol. Coilovers for the R26..... Any recommendations? Thanks again lads
Drive car first before wanting coilz? You'll be surprised. Why you want coilz? You won't find a decent set of coilovers under £700 and they are BC
Welcome along. Sounds like you have a few plans and the carbon sounds good.. If the quality is good then we'd be happy to retail some for you. For coilovers as above really, see how you go with the std set up first. The BC's are a very good choice and come in just under £700. Take a look at our website for further details. http://www.cazanracing.co.uk/bc-racing-br-series-coilover--type-ra-93367-p.asp
Most people I talked too recommended cooksport springs they were developed by josh cook specifically for the meg he's a race car driver not some guy in a chineese factory so will be miles better than most springs to improve the car unfortunately they're currently sold out could have a wait to get some I'm hopefully getting mine fitted next week they would be a good improvement without the expense of coils
I'll take a look at the cook sport springs cheers, just been looking at options of buying a cheaper 225 and upgrading to a quaife LSD or going for the R26, I'll be striping the interior out and selling the original seats and wheels
This is a valid point, although if you put the £2k aside for mods you can get the R26 for £6k and not need as many mods a remaps only a few hundred quid
Cheers, just weighing up the options, either R26 or a cheaper 225 and spend the difference on LSD and upgrades. If I get a R26 I know I can sell the recaro seats at a decent price as will be fitting buckets. something like this I'm looking to achieve It won't be a daily driver and will be putting a cage in it, custom carbon bonnet, spoiler, door cards and Perspex rear windows
Is that right about the TPMS? I always thought mine had been deactivated. OP, welcome along anyway. In which direction are you 30 miles from Leeds?
Welcome along, if you've got 2k to put a carbon bonnet , roll cage, seats, harnesses, stage 1 map, Perspex rear windows amongst other things then good luck cos 2k is not enough , your going to have to up your budget quite a lot
Yeah TPMS is tyre pressure monitoring system. From what ive read it was removed on standard r26's (mine didnt come with it) unsure if it came with the LUX pack though
All the carbon work I won't be paying for as a mate wants to mould parts and produce parts to sell, as I said earlier in the thread the budget will probs increase, also the cage will be custom fabricated my a mate so pretty cheap
