You don't. You can add 2 mods to the car for an individual race. But when you change races you need to re mod the car. But then you don't keep the se car for long , as soon as you can afford a better car you just buy a new one.
That's the only thing that annoys me about that game! I thought I was making decent progress, but now I just seem to be stuck and as you say you'd need to spend a fortune to get anywhere fast.
