[RANT] I genuinely think my local have no interest in my car, i'm just getting that feeling recently. I'll start from the beginning, about two months ago now! if not more. I have a rattle as slow speeds coming from the passenger side wheel area: Visit 1: booked it in for a check and I said most likely the track rod end or anti-roll bar link. They gave me the car back and said non of the above, hub bearings need replacing. Visit 2: made a booking for the hub bearings to be replaced, this was done along with the bush in the near side steering rack. This was better but still that rattle at slow speeds. Visit 3: passenger side spring snapped so ended up with at Halfords garage at the last minute, had the spring and top mount replaced and just as i'd paid and was walking out the door he shouted "btw your track rod end needs replacing" why the prick didn't do that when he had the car for 3 days is beyond me. So anyway, the track rod end, must be the source of my rattle, so bringing time up to date: Visit 4: booked it in for the track rod end to be replaced, same place as visit 1, they called and said drivers could do with doing too, got both done. Picked the car up and drove away, as soon as i set off it rattles as slow speed. WTF!!! Does anyone have any idea what the mysterious piece of steering/suspension could be causing it, so that's spring, top mount, hub bearing and track rod end, i've literally just been down there again and he can't see anything "book it in if it gets worse' How about fuck off, i want it fixed  Driving at a normal 30mph and you can't hear a thing, this is just very slow speeds on an uneven surface. I mentioned the arb again today and he said its fine. [/RANT]
I'd asked them to check that as I now and again hear it knock coming out of first gear rolling to a stop. But to be honest I don't trust that they've even looked. Hmmm, probably adding 2 and 2 and making 5 but would a moving gear box due to a fucked mount cause a random bite point, mine seems to be moving of late, even after the clutch was done 13 months ago.
You have a big amount of torque moving that engine forwards and backwards so I'd be looking at that next. Don't get a polyurethane bush on a diesel though or it will bloody rattle the whole car lol. This is why I do all my own servicing and repairs. You just can't trust the average garage on cars like these.
NS Steering rack bolt? Anti twist link? Swivel bearing? Driveshaft spline wear? Lower arm? RS 175 Lux
Job done, my local garage is sacked, they obviously couldn't be arsed, took it to Mark Black this morning and it's sorted, new nears side anti rotation link.
Cowboy mechanics! This is why I wont take any of my cars I've had to any old garage....you just don't know what you're getting. Glad you got it sorted by someone who knows what they're looking at
Anything small i used to take local but recently they've pissed me off, 3 times they've had it in for this knocking sound! Ah well, job done, I'm happy. Well worth the 90 minute drive.
