225 Nankang AR-1 review

  1. Right folks...

Ive had the AR-1s fitted for around a week now so here is my feedback

The first time i used them was in the dry on the road. The grip was good from the start. No fancy driving, just normal road driving. Road noise is a bit loud, however i have removed the rear seats for a trackday so maybe they wont be as loud with seats fitted. They look the nuts when fitted!

I then done a cheeky trackday at Abingdon airfield. It was a scorching hot day and i lowered the pressures to 28 psi front and rear (hot). They never once let go. Grip was amazing especially under hard braking. Not once did they lock up! I ran Brembo HC discs, CL RC6 pads and ATE Type 200 race fluid. I was braking so hard and late, i boiled the fluid!!!!! The tyres were far superior to anything ive used before.

Ill try to post a link to me ahead of my mate in his super charged Atom. The only reason I pull over to let him past is when my brakes boil.

And now....ive just done a 200 mile drive home in monsoon rain from Wales. In the wet they are good. No major issues at all, even with 'spirited' driving. Occasional understeer on roundabouts but not as bad as i was expecting. However.............standing water............avoid it!! The car aquaplains big time. Its almost like hitting ice. This may sound weird but the tarmac plays a huge part too. The dark black shiny stuff has the biggest effect. The lighter grey looking stuff has little effect.

After the drive home today ill probabl stick road tyres back on and use them in the summer and trackdays.

    Hope this helps

Any questions, feel free to ask

  3. Good to read about these tyres. What semi slicks have you tried previously and how do they compare?

  4. Ive used the R888's and cut slicks on my old bike engined kit car. With the R888's the wettest ive used them was in damp/wet conditions with no standing water and not monsoon rain like today. I found them ok in the wet. Id say, on par with the AR-1s. However the price of the AR-1s was £548 in 225/40/R18. The R888s are around £620.

  9. Thanks for the write up - very useful - particularly about the aqua planing although this may be less of an issue on a heavier car.

Did you get any data of corner/braking g?

  10. No mate, no data at all. All i will say is, despite a very very heavy brake foot....they didnt lock up
