225 Knocking sound from front

Discussion in 'Suspension, Brakes, Wheels & Tyres section' started by Jaffa, Aug 10, 2013.

  1. Hi all - short history =
1 - took car to garage 1 = replaced front nearside anti rollbar link.
Knocking sound lessened, but still audible.
2 - Took to garage 2 = investigation did not find anything wrong, except for offside front ball joint gaiter split on an acute drop link - don't know what it's function is. They suggested they swap it to the nearside to see if the sound goes with it.
Over a week later I am still waiting for them to get back to me.
    Not impressed.

Has anyone got any ideas what may be the source of this knocking sound? It seems to be more noticeable at slow speeds on rough surfaces. Any help appreciated. Thanks.

Sounds like a ball joint to me, i had a similar complaint on my old Clio.

  3. Thanks Gavin for quick reply. I read somewhere else a mechanic posting that he had replaced loads of these. Do you happen to know if this is a common complaint, and whether a "heavy duty" version is available. After all, on a 225 or similar, you would expect components to withstand heavy usage, wouldn't you? Or am I being naive?

It's just a general wear and tear item mate, I would just replace like for like. How many miles has the cars done?

  5. 65,000 miles. I've just seen on another site someone recommending Lemforder for parts. Any views?

I'd say that's a fair amount for a replacement. Get it booked into a specialist they should be able to tell you exactly what it is.

  7. Hahaha - I love your faith - my second garage IS a Renault Specialist!!!

LOL, fair enough. Maybe change that ball joint with the split gator then.

  9. ok - thanks for the confirmation - cheers

  10. Update - I gave up on the Renault specialist, who after several phone calls, never did return my calls. My local garage has now replaced the offside drop link ball joint, which they said was worn at both ends. However, the low speed knocking noise still remains - eeeek!!! Internet investigations has come up with: 1 - Link that connects wishbone to hub, and 2 - Anti-rotation link. Not knowing what either of these things are, has anyone got any idea if these could be responsible for a low speed knocking sound over rough surfaces?

  12. Thanks - I'll add that lot to the list for investigation.

  13. just drive up to mark he will sort it for you.

  14. Thanks for suggestion, Frizz, but it's a long drive for me.

  15. Mate...he's worth the drive! I drove all the way up (and back!) from Reigate on Saturday for him to change my steering rack. He had it whipped in and out in under an hour and tracked within the hour! It might have cost 3/4 tank of fuel and nearly 8 hours of driving, but it was still waaaaaaay cheaper than having it done locally or by K-tec. You could probably factor in a night in a travel lodge and dinner for just over an hours worth of labour from most indies.

  16. I hear you clearly Rob. Have you an address and postcode with phone number. Would be extremely grateful - thanks

  17. Sent you a PM mate

  18. Thanks Rob, I'll reply to you in a minute via your pm. As to propgress so far, I've had my two local guys check the front suspension completely. They both cannot find anything. Yes, the nearside anti roll bar link was replaced, and the offside split gator ball joint also, and the whilst there is an obvious lessening in the noise, the low speed rumble/knocking continues. They both said that it isn't consistent. Sometimes it clatters away over rough surfaces, and yet undulating ground causes it to do nothing. Drive the same course again and the opposite is true. I've watched them prod and push and lever and bounce, and they both say that the complete suspension is as tight as a drum. It's true to say that using the brakes sets it in motion, and yet from standstill, it starts up within a couple of meters. We are all completely mystified.

  19. Hello Jaffa, I feel your pain as I'm in the same place as you. I've had the same stuff replaced and my noise still remains. It's like a single solid knock/thud. It only happens when hitting speed bumps and pot holes with a single thud each time. Mine is back in again soon fir some more fault finding. They say the problem is when it's on the ramp they cant make the thud happen, as they can't produce the same force as the weight of the car on the road. Sorry this is no help but I'm feeling your pain.

  20. Long shot but have you checked the coil springs??!

  22. Not that much of a longshot mate. Mine started knocking and first thing I checked was the spring and it had snapped so I used it as an excuse to order some cooksports.

  23. Just an update. I still have this repetitive knocking at slow speeds over rumbly surfaces. However, the car is in the local tomorrow to investigate a tyre sensor problem, so I expect they'll have another look for this noise. Will let you know if they find it. Thanks for all your help so far.

  24. I have more of a squeak than a.knock, but my problem is the exhaust heat shield under the chassis. Worth checking for movement

  25. I have the exact same issue, its a knocking sound and it appears to come from the drivers side, it has been into Ktec and they replaced the top mount as the wheel had some play but that hasn't got rid of the knocking sound. I have had it for a while now, the sound hasn't got worse but my steering has got a little heavy and it struggles to self centre. Im guessing that's the hub bearings? Ktec said that the problem with the rattle was a worn steering rack but I got a quote for a grand to replace it and they weren't sure if this was 100% the issue.

Like you the noise cannot be replicated once the car is on the stands, its only when its driving.

  26. I had a replacement steering rack under warranty and it hasn't cured it. I'm sure I read somewhere that the subframe can come loose?

  27. I'm having this too. When I bang the top(front) of the tyre with it on the deck it rattles. If I do the same with it jacked up it doesn't. It clearly happens under load, as it does when im driving going over little bumps. I've just replaced the drop link, I've had new brakes fitted so they're not loose, I've had the steering rack bush replaced and the steering is tight as and the subframe was refit so no looseness there.

Can the top mount really cause this?

  28. I had my top mount replaced, it fixed the slight play in my wheel but the rattle remains

  29. Check the front springs to make sure they're not broken

Did anyone having this issue over get to the bottom of it? Mine now has this problem and i'm having issues locating it.

  31. I had a 1.9dci that knocked from the passenger side. It was the steering rack bush that had gone. Check for up & down movement in the rack ends.

Been done Lee, Mark Black did it. Just been talking to him actually, we reckon gearbox mount as i've heard it do it coming out of gear too. I'm going to take it down in the next few weeks.

  33. I also had a knock on my cup before I installed cooksport springs. At the same time I stripped the top mounts cleaned & re-greased them problem solved. I've also heard of the bottom bolt on the swivel hub coming loose & causing a knock.

Well it just so happened to be the monkeys in Halfords that did the mount and spring and i did notice a knock after that so it wouldn't surprise me.

  35. Possibly just a loose top mount then.
    Hopefully.

  36. I had a knocking to the o/s/f when reversing and going over speed bumps. Turned out my one of the 2 links was seized at the ball joints. So stopped it from moving. Once changed it was fine.. There is a link on here with all the drop link bars and cheaper alternatives. Easy to change...

I'm booked in to go and see Mark Black on the 14th, he'll sort it.

  38. An old thread, I know, but did anyone ever get to the bottom of this?
I have the same knock at slow speed over uneven surfaces, but only in a straight line...
Can make the sound happen to order by applying brakes while crawling forward or by hitting biting point in reverse. Stops doing it with 1/2 a turn of steering either way.
Already changed no end of suspension bushes, joints, links and shocks.

  39. engine/gearbox mount. im clutching here mind

  40. They’re on my list.
But I’m puzzled why it doesn’t do it as soon as I turn off centre. And the noise sounds like it’s only just beyond the bulkhead. Makes me think it’s a steering rack/column bush or coupling?...
