So... My car has been making a grinding sound whenever I change down from 4th to 3rd. After taking it to the garage, I've been told it's the synchromesh and that I'll need a new gearbox So far the quotes I've been getting vary wildly from painful to terrifying! If anyone knows of any info that might help or can recommend a gearbox specialist that doesn't mess you about... And preferably within a few hours of Oxford you'd be a life saver! Try 3D Transmissions in Reading. Close. Well established. Easy option. Another option is chop it in through the auctions or via WBAC, take a hit on the money but add the repair cost saved and go shopping. Some won't like that but it's a dog eat dog world.
I'd give Renault a ring and tell them the situation. I ordered a refurbished gearbox from them and got £350-400 Renault contribution worked out much cheaper then rebuilding the gearbox.
Yeah mines 9 years old and they contributed should of been £1500 odd and i needed up paying £1100ish. I have full Renault service history and everything I've bought has been from a dealer so I guess that must of helped.
Interesting... Mine has full Renault service history, might take a drive to Renault and give it a try.
6th gear pair, crown wheel and pinion shaft were damaged. There was wear to the 2nd gear synchro and all the bearings and seals replaced. Cost for rebuild excluding VAT was: Parts £437 Labour £377 Bearings and Seals £178
Don't suppose you remember the reason Renault contributed? Was it because it was under a certain mileage or something like that?
Because I moaned that it shouldn't of gone on a 9 year old car and I had been waiting roughly 4 weeks for it to be delivered. Brand new box is about £2700 iirc Ouch Surely you don't need a clutch unless it hasn't been done before. I didn't bother changing mine as it was under two years old. My labour was £480 which I had done at Gearlink in Salisbury.
Problem is I've only had the car a year and don't know if the clutch has been done before. Paying all that labour I might as well get it done while the gearbox is out. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
Being passed that slip of paper by some spotty 21yr old in penfold glasses somehow made it worse lol. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
As if things couldn't get worse I've just found out that this car has some "special" clutch, that's gunna cost £884 just for the clutch. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
Hey mate, There are plenty of dCi gearboxes on ebay. Go grab one and call it a day. No need for a new gearbox which will double the investment in the total car. Or if you want to repair your gearbox, I have a petrol one for spares as well. I had bearings issues (classic problem on this box) and it cost me 300£ to change them and everything. I used the same chance to fit the LSD aswell. I bet you can resolve your issue with 500£ in total. S.
Also I can help you regarding all the parts you need. I have a DMF in good working order for sale if you really need (i doubt although) and I can sort you an uprated clutch for your car at very decent money (nowhere near what you are quoting there). I'm running that kind of clutch breed on my 500Nm hybrid turbo car for the last 8-9 months. And if Stratford upon Avon is not very far for you, I can point you to my mechanic to do the change for you at decent price. The only part you really need to buy from Renault is the clutch bearing/cylinder (whatever you want to call it). S.
To be honest I don't mind paying the £600 for the gearbox, it's the clutch shit that's stinging especially when there might not even be anything wrong with it.
Trouble is a lot of people on here know the ins and outs of their cars but I'm no mechanic... Far from it, in more comfortable behind a laptop than under a bonnet Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
you may well not need a clutch kit, depends if you can leave it in bits whilst you wait for a new one if it does need it.
The whole thing is giving me a headache I need to stop and think a bit. Take in everything and work out what to do next. Cheers to everyone for all the advice, been a big help! Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
Unless the dmf is out of tolerance I wouldn't bother changing it. I would fit a new pressure & friction plate along with the slave cylinder though. Lee
I agree, I can't see as the flywheel needs replacing. Think I'm just going to get the gearbox(£650) and the clutch kit(£150). Gotta find a good garage to make sure I get a solid job done. Anything else anyone thinks I may need?
No not yet. Planning on taking a drive up there Monday. They weren't willing to say any prices on the phone until they've looked at it. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
Just make sure, if you don't go down the pukka refurb route like 3D, you are not paying a big wedge to drop a box in that is not much better than the one coming out.
