250 Gear stick moving an a faint clunk

  1. Hey all,

Quick question. I noticed a very slight clunk this morning when coming on and off the throttle in 3rd gear a really low speeds, say 20mph.

With that, the gear stick also has a bit of movement that you can feel, but not see, when doing the same. Only seem noticeable in 3rd, 4th and 5th though. Any ideas? Gearbox mount, engine mount, worn box (hope not!)

    Ta!

I had the same issue on my old box, Turned out it was internals on it. I left it that long that it rendered the box scrap essentially. Mine did have quite a bit of movement on the gearstick mind you. Think you can kinda see it on some of my older track videos coming off the power

  3. Thanks Jamie.

It does have a faint whine in 3rd which has been there since I bought the box (2nd hand mine is a non-Cup so bought the LSD box from Mr Pink) but it's never got any worse.

If it is that, I have my original non LSD box that has only covered 19k miles. I wonder if it's feasible to transfer just the diff from my current box into mt old one?

That does sound exactly like the issue I had and it got progressively worse.

I'd look at swapping it over, would save a rebuild on the lsd box

  5. Already made enquiries with Mark@MRS. Probably worth banging a new clutch in too at the same time, even though it's only done 31k. Seems daft not to when it's all apart.

  6. Just out of interest, has anyone ever heard of a diff failing in these boxes? God forbid I get down to MRS, he opens up my box and finds the diff is shot, my only option then is to put my original box back in with no LSD. These cars in Stage 1 trim would be a nightmare with no diff.

  7. Or it could be a mount issue

  8. I did wonder, but I noticed another symptom last night.

    • Put the car in first and gently bring the clutch up and there is a clunk as some slack is taken up somewhere
    • Do this a second time and no clunk
    • Now put the car in reverse and repeat. Clunk as slack is taken up
    • In reverse again, no clunk
    • Back to first, clunk again
Something somewhere has play in it. And now I'm hyper sensitive to all things gearbox related, the play coming on and off the throttle in 3rd/4th mentioned above is definitely less pronounced when the car is warmed up.

  9. I used to have this in my clio 197, and it was one of the lower arm links.

  10. Wrong post

  11. Do you mean "slack" being taken up but only when going from 1st to reverse or vice versa?

Any chance of linking the type of part, nor sure which bit you mean by lower arm link.

    Ta!

  12. Yeh was directional. One like this, mine was very baggy/lose moving when it was took to the garage suppose to be stiffish. Easy to tell.

  13. Cheers buddy, I'll add it to the list of things to check.

  14. You could feel the knock through the pedals and gearstick, i was suprised when the garage told me what it was.
