First refresh item to do? (MK3)

  1. The brakes, engine and gearbox are all serviced or renewed, the wheels reconditioned & with new tyres so it’s the suspension and chassis next…..

The car (250 Cup) is 6 years old but has only done 30k miles but I think the suspension feels a little tired, what’s the first, or first few, little jobs to do that perhaps I can do myself?

Presumably the shocks will still be ok after only 30k?

I really don’t want to think about new springs and/or shocks if I can, was thinking more along the line of bushes/links/widgets etc. that I can replace myself for relatively small cash….

(I’ve already fitted a Vibra-Technics lower engine mount and OEM lower engine mount)

    Thanks!

  2. I'll be interested in what others have done. I have just finished renewing ignition coils. Just as a preventative maintenance. My car is RS250 2010 with 49k. I haven't touch the gearbox yet. Was thinking of changing the oil.

I would suggest changing the battery if you haven't yet though.

  3. Thanks, was mainly interested in suspension/chassis jobs...

  4. if you are replacing bushes ect, then stick to OEM, i would have thought your springs and dampers would be good for 100k miles before they feel tired

  5. Well after recently fitting coilovers i found that one of the coils on the rear springs had broke off. So probably worth an inspection atleast.

  6. Anti-rotation links go often for me (there's a recent thread on here for some cheaper ones - I've always used Renault and they are £60 each so some cheaper ones would be a good shout)

ARB drop links - these tend to last for me and at 30k should be ok but they were cheaper than the anti-rotation links so could be worth doing.

Main thing is the lower ball joints. These have a massive impact on the way the car drives - especially the way the steering will pull about during acceleration and when driving over rough roads. So I would recommend these primarily. I wouldn't change if there's no sign of them needing doing, though, obviously. You can do it yourself - I always have - but it's a much bigger job than the first two I mentioned.

Top mounts tend to be ok.

Lower wishbones bushes can go (mine did at about 50k) but I've gone for Powerflex and I think SuperPro might have been a better choice.

That's my advice, anyway. I have spent a massive amount of time over 4 years replacing every suspension component (a lot of them multiple times) and have got used to what tends to go.

  7. Is the anti rotation link just giving support to the bottom of the hub taking force off the lower wishbone mount?
Just trying to work out what it does and if you could tell when one's worn.

  8. Easy to tell, the balljoints at each end are really loose, should be quite stiff, the one on me old clio used to cause a knocking noise with sudden car movement/uneven road surface. And check for worn rubber on a them aswel.

  9. Thanks James (and everyone)

  10. Similar situation to yourself, 32k on my cup. Recently had the anti rotation links, top ball joints, lower swivel joints all done, drop links are being changed during the week. So far it feels like a new car, changed the way it drives so much for the better
