R26 Check ESP/ABS after front wheel bearing

Discussion in 'Suspension, Brakes, Wheels & Tyres section' started by 3hirty8ight, Jun 5, 2016.

  1. Hi, gave the front drivers side a total refresh including a new SKF wheel bearing with inbuilt ABS ring.

Car drives perfectly now, no bumps/knocks, but after a mile of driving I got the check ESP/ABS lights. The sensor was fine before. I hope it's not the bearing..

Any other possibilities!? Things to check!?

  2. Its most likely that the bearing is in backwards,if the sensor and cable are ok.

One side has a magnetic ring inside which MUST be on the ABS sensor side I'm afraid.

  3. Yeah, the bearing is in the right way round.

I need to check the ABS sensor is right in - I'm pretty sure its in as far as it can without feeling like its going to break!. There's 2 ridges in the sensor to locate it in in the metal clip, should it push all the way so the metal clip is holding the outer most ridge? Are they susceptible to not working once they've been disturbed?

    Thanks

  4. On closer inspection it looks like the abs ring on the bearing has been in contact with the abs sensor clip for some reason?!

What on earth would cause that!? - The bearing wasn't overly forced into the housing over the abs securing clip either. Anyone else experienced difficulty with front wheel bearings like this? Or have I done something wrong on installation?

    Thanks

  5. I'm in the same boat - had the hubs out and some new Renault bearings put in, but now have the ESP/ABS error. Not sure why, i've done the work myself but had a garage do the bearings, and have given them the car to check.

  6. Try disconnecting the electrical lead of the ABS sensor.... Measure with a multimeter... I'm sure the resistance of the sensor is around 1K ohms....
If it reads as an open circuit, it'll be a faulty sensor...
Other than that it'll be where the ABS picks up from.
ABS sensors are fragile so will be a process of elimination.

  7. If installed correctly the abs sensor can't touch the pick up ring.

Any chance of dirt, rust or other debris getting on any part, as this can funk it all up.

  8. Thanks for the reply's. Had it on Snap on diagnostics last night and it refers to open circuit so I've ordered a genuine sensor. Cleared the code and it returned instantly.. didn't pick up a wheel speed at all at any point. I ordered a new bearing while I was at it just in case I need to do both. Will keep you posted!

  9. Ironically I now have the same problem after doing mine :unamused:

The bearings are definitely in the right way etc
I'm hoping it will be offside sensor as I recall pulling it a bit tight when I took it apart,it's probably broken the wire inside. Damn!:tired:

  10. Fragile little buggers apparently! - Mine goes in tomorrow to have new sensor fitted. Diagnostic's picked up the fault as 'open loop' so normally points to a dud sensor.

  11. Ironically mine been doing it since its been raining of my 250
    Just had both balljoints done

  12. Ok, so it appears my new SKF wheel bearings abs ring has mangled itself into the sensor clip somehow. So needs a new wheel bearing..

God know how. Must have installed it incorrectly. Not that I can think of way of doing it incorrectly!?

    Genuine Renault bearing going in..

  13. What exactly do you mean by the abs ring? Isn't it just a magnetic bit inside the bearing!? As in you cant see it.

    What exactly has mangled?

Pain in the ass to take it all off again hey :smirk:

  14. Yeah the actual plastic ring bit has all mangled up.. Really odd. I'm pretty mechanically competent so wouldn't have put it all back together if it had been obviously wrong!

Not so bad to dismantle as it's all been apart in the last few weeks! Just irritating! - looking forward to having it all back working..

  15. Have you trapped one of the little location tabs on the abs clip ring between the bearing and hub? And it's then catching on the plastic ring.

I know what you mean about having everything back working perfectly again :smirk:

  16. No, clip was fine! Just got the car back and it's perfect.. Genuine wheel bearings only from now!

I had missed cruise control so badly! Car driver lovely now!

  17. Have you got any pics of the old bearing and the mangled bit?

Glad you got it sorted out,i want to check what the fault is on mine but alas the rs tuner I have hasn't got the abs module so it only tells me there IS a fault!

  18. I'll dig it out the bin later! - I wouldn't worry, it'll be one of 2 things, the sensor, or the bearing. Both of which are relatively straight forward. but make sure you use genuine Renault bits only!

  19. My issues are still on-going. After having the car mapped at RST it's now got a "Brake Malfunction" permanently on, which i'm not sure is due to the ABS/EPS issue or not.

I have had the sensors out today and both give me no reading on resistance which i wasn't expecting as the original ECU error was specifically for the NSF, not both.

Looking at the bearings after removing the sensors (the hubs are still in-place) it seems there is a clear difference, with on being shiny metallic the other dull, so i do wonder if one isn't inserted the correct way.

  20. Osf seems to be mounted Wrong way. New bearing am afraid

  21. Thanks... booked in with the garage for next week. I think they can fix that seeing as they've caused the problem!

  22. Change of The bearing am afraid. Bin there Done that

  23. Just to confirm that the bearing had been put in the wrong way and it was all fixed by the garage that made the mistake.

The "Brake Fault" STOP error that came up seemed to be down to a permanent rear ABS fault that was logged, which disappeared after clearing the ECU. I can only presume it didn't like being on the 2WD rolling road without the rear wheels moving and with a front ABS issue. In any regard all faults cleared and haven't come back since sorting the bearing out

  24. Guys after your experiences fitting new wheel bearings would you say stick to Renault parts or did any of you go ahead without problems using OEM equivalent.

    If OEM equivalent which brands?

    Cheers.

  25. Are you guys using a hydraulic press or one of those threaded bar press/puller kits.
