250 Broken CL 5+ Pads

Discussion in 'Suspension, Brakes, Wheels & Tyres section' started by jack250, Mar 13, 2017.

  1. Had the caliper off today and the pad fell to pieces when I took it off. It hasn't come away from the backing plate, it's split about 4mm away from it.

Purchased from k-tec where they state that as it's a race product there is no warrenty. Only been on the car since June. Gutted! Spoke to CL and they can't do anything either as purchased from a non official dealer.

Been looking at performance friction z rated and mintex 1144's. What's the verdict on either of these chaps? Any other recommendations?

    Cheers

  2. I had a set of CL RC5+ do this to me too, a few years ago. They were from KTEC also.

KTEC gave me a replacement set. They said that they could have been from a bad batch but, in all honesty, CL don't like wet and cold conditions. Have they been in over the winter? Mine were. The water gets behind the friction material and when it freezes it expands and breaks it up.

I still use them but I remove them over the winter periods and fit OEM.

  3. I've got 1144's on mine now and think they're the best pad you can get for the money.

Much more power than standard pads but only small amount of squeal and dust - Perfect road pad in my opinion.

Similar to DS2500 pads but half the price.

  4. I ran some for ages (couple years) and had bits falls off the edge in chunks but nothing that bad.

Quite common, pretty much every set I've had have fallen apart rears are the worst.

They don't like cold and wet, as per most track or race spec compounds

  6. Ive used PF pads for many years now, Z rated for fast road and the odd ring trip,

08s for track and lots of excessive braking they are very very good but a little harsh but they stop you!!

Speak to Alyn at AS Performance he a very helpful chap with good prices.

  7. Cheers for all the help as per chaps.

Yep they've been on for the whole of winter and that caliper won't have been off for a while so could've been like that for quite some time now.

If I'm honest I really can't be bothered trying to get the money back for them. When I spoke to CL, the second I mentioned ktec they weren't too keen to help.

Suppose as they are a race pad, not too many complaints can be had with this happening, especially over winter and them maybe not going through proper heat cycles etc

I'll give Alyn a call and see what he recommends for my usage. Cheers for the link @BIGE

Ktec don't actually get them through the CL UK distributor, hence their unwillingness to help. Buy direct from Paul next time and you shouldn't have any issues again, I know if several people that have had replacement sets of pads of him for various reasons

I have bought pads direct from CL, they are fast at dispatching and not that much more expensive, had cl6's and now CL8's no problem here :sunglasses:

  10. Yep always try and buy direct is the lesson learnt I guess!

I've gone for the performance friction z rated after speaking to a couple of different companies. Went with AS Performance in the end as great adivise, overnight delivery for free and cheapest. Bang on! Will let you know the results chaps

  11. I got the PF Z from AS performance too (for my mk2), really good so far. In fact I was so chuffed with them for the price and Alyn's service I ordered another set for my brother's Clio 200

  12. I had an issue with cl rc5 pads from ktec and in fairness to them they credited me the full price against another set of pads. Now got ferrodo 1.11s which I've been very impressed with braking wise although they do make a mess of your wheels

  13. How long ago was this Yorkie?

  14. Result.
I've always found them very good and helpful.

  16. How does everyone find the CL5+ pads? I get a really loud whirring noise from mine under fairly gentle braking at 40-50+ mph. My brakes never did that on the standard pads. Is this normal?

  17. My make the same noise. They have no anti-noise features unlike the standard pads which are littered with them. I wouldn't worry.

  18. Grooved discs?

  19. They make a hell of a noise. For road I wouldn't bother with these

They are only noisy if they havnt been used properly. Get some decent hest in them and they are silent.

  21. You have to do some serious braking to keep the noise down. I found myself going out late at night and doing a bedding in process at least once a week! Maybe they were just extra bad over the winter months so its seemed worse than they should be?

  22. I also run them on the road, yes they are noisy, until you speed up .. but it is not just the squeak, like tev250 on gentle brake hey can make a loud whirring noise.

Whirring noise is almost definitely the grooved discs, silly things that offer nothing much noise LOL
