SUMP OIL WEEP (250)

Discussion in 'Mechanical - Engine, Gearbox, Exhaust etc' started by T&biskits, Sep 19, 2021.

  1. Can anybody shed any light on this oil that I get weeping from this cutout in the sump ( it's not pouring out, just misting). I've replaced the sump gasket, but to no avail. It's been like it for a few years, but my OCD is getting the better of me.

  2. I guess if you’ve sorted the sump gasket it could be the crank rear oil seal if it’s definitely oil

Just a thought if that’s the joint between engine and gearbox - are you loosing clutch fluid from the release bearing ?

  3. ^^^ Exactly that ^^^

  4. rear crankshaft oil seal, possibly gearbox input shaft seal but i doubt it.

  5. Not losing clutch fluid, so looks like a gearbox off fix then?

  6. Look the color of the fluid or smell it. Car liquids are very recognizables by smell.

  7. You can tell by smell if engine or gearbox oil.
My first rs250 had a slight leak in the same place when I first purchased it from a well known RS specialist. ( nice of them not to fix it ) I could tell straight away it was gearbox oil leak. Decided to save and then lump a lot of work together as gearbox had to come out. The gearbox was taken out and the leak was coming from the input shaft seal. Mark Black spoke to a gearbox specialist and he said that Renault had a few problems with the early RS250’s as the oil seals were oversize causing them to leak. Fitted the latest seal, problem solved.

  8. If engine oil it will be the crank seal or the main bearing cap is leaking next to it. Common issue, most look a bit wet underneath

  9. Is gearbox removal an easy( ish) DIY job..

  10. Its not the worst job to remove, box is quite heavy but i managed it easy enough.

  11. Is it doable in a STD size garage.. Thinking perhaps a project in the winter.

  12. Done a 1.5 dci meg in my garage on axle stands. The RS looks like exactly the same job.

F4R's really are a bit of an oil sweater aren't they. Before I put the replacement engine in my 182, we lifted the engine up onto a table and replaced the sump gasket, removed and resealed the main bearing end cap and fitted a new crankshaft oil seal, new sump gasket and removed and resealed the rocker cover. All were leaking.
