R26 Wishbone bush removal

  1. Has anyone else had hell on getting this evil little bush out of their wishbones!?
    1bf6d755b65a8541869f56ef71c313b1.jpg

It’s the smaller one - who’s also responsible for forcing you dismantle half of the front end just to get the bolt out! [emoji35]
I’ve wrestled one out today by drilling around the rubber and removing the inner spacer, putting my hacksaw blade through the bush and cutting down in to it, then chiselling the hell out of it! The trouble is, you can’t be too heavy on it because the sleeve on the wishbone is only tacked on on one side....crazy.

I’ve got the other one to do tomorrow and I’m reckoning there’s got to be a better way of tackling it. The other bush and the ball joint were ok, I just pressed them out, but this one is being a royal PITA!

Anyway, anybody got any tips? Other than I should have got complete wishbones!.......I’ve already told myself that ha ha. [emoji1787]

    Cheers.

  2. If you’re changing them for poly bushes the sleeve has to come off anyway, I dremelled the world through on mine then persuaded them out with a leather mallet:wink:

But yeah full wishbones would’ve been much easier, I got mine from moto dynamic for about £140 the pair delivered.

  3. Really, I didn’t know that about the poly bushes and removing the sleeve.
Unfortunately, I’ve just got oem bushes!

If that sleeve was either non existent or well secured, you could just press it out. It’s a strange design but I guess renault never bother rebuilding the wishbones so it makes no odds to them.

  4. Jeees that’s cheap. I assume pattern parts?

  5. when i did mine, i held it in a vice very lightly, put the biggest bolt through the fixing hole and whack it with a 4lb lump hammer, once it starts to move then it gets easier.

  6. load of WD40 on it night before helps too, I did it in a vice too with a socket that fits just on the outer metal of the bush, then refitted in vice too

  7. Nope, genuine Renault!

  8. Now I really wish I’d have just got the full assemblies! Doh!

  9. Cheers guys.
I was thinking about this actually and I think if I had narrower vice jaws I could probably get in and grip the sleeve. I’ll have another look later. It really is one of the most awkward ones I’ve ever dealt with. I’ll also load it up with wd for when I get chance to tackle it again later today.

  12. The mk2 ones are easier than the mk3 's are, well from what i have found so far, i bought another set of mk3 wishbones as i was struggling to get them out.

hi ian hows it going i think the wishbones on it now are the same ones from factory so an upgrade is a must and i need to do the hubs as well while i’m there and i was looking at my back shocks they are rusty so thinking of upgrading to bc coilovers is anybody selling any

  14. Its all going well, busy with work but i can't complain after what we have been in.

They can't be the original ones, unless your car has only done 30k miles.
The bushes are available, or you can go Powerflex, i did, but don't go for the adjustable ones.

Are you going to do trackdays, if so then bite the bullet and get the BC's, just turn them down to Zero for the road.

i know ian this virus has upset everything the world will never be the same. iv just let the jobs pile up so when i was going to do my hubs i was going to replace the wishbones as well with polybush kit that should sort the centring for the steering wheel and then maybe tackle the coilovers maybe the odd track day as angelsey is only half an hour away from me. might as well keep the car all the money i have spent laughing......

  16. The jobs i could have done i wasn't allowed, all the marina's closed the gates so no access.

The bushes bash out with a decent hammer

Was going to try and get to Anglesey, but couldn't get a date at EFI the day before, might try to get up in October if there is a day there

  27. Right chaps, I’ve finished rebuilding my wishbones!
The rear bush was a ball ache to press in. I couldn’t manage it in my big vice, it was waaay too tight. I ended up using a fly press and it went in ok. I measured the wishbone and bush and there was 0.5mm of interference! Wowsers.
Anyway, I have a question for you. The balljoints have a notch on the bottom, please tell me that isn’t an alignment aid!? I didn’t notice it until I’d pressed them in. The old ones have it too but I was too eager and didn’t note where it was positioned previously.

Gonna give them a touch up coat of paint tonight then hopefully rebuild the car at the weekend. [emoji1303]

  28. this notch is only there for manufacturing purposes, nothing to worry, its a ball joint so the same articulation angle in all direction

  29. What I was hoping, thanks for that.

On this subject, I couldn’t help but wonder why this type of suspension design uses a ball joint? By using a ball joint, it then needs the anti twist link.
Does the ball joint need to be able to rotate with this suspension design?
Unless it does move slightly to allow a certain amount of compliance??
    Anybody clued up on this?

  30. the up and down articulation is required in this design, when the wheels bump or rebound on the road the wishbone only rotate around it axis where it fit to the subframe

  31. Rebuilt the car today and it all went pretty smoothly so I’m chuffed!
I’ve only been for a short drive and it feels great so far. I had a slight knocking and that’s cured. I think it was the os twist link.
I’ll get an alignment done at some point but I’m going to replace the track rod assemblies again first and maybe the shocks. I’ve checked the alignment with my trakrite gauge for now though and it’s ok.

A few obligatory pictures for you guys.

  33. Where are you from J? I'm in N Wales too.

I think I'm going to get new parts and poly Bush them, the ball joints aren't the best anyway so will be a better job for me.

  34. Re-read this again (thanks Leigh) as wishbones are the final parts I need for a refresh. Was going to get new arms but it looks like you can only get left hand new Renault arms but not right hand ones (tried RPD, ROFRAG, KAM RACING etc.) so will just refurb my current arms and go powerflex for bushes as they should be easier to install.

  35. To be honest, if it wasn’t for that bush giving me hell, it would have been a fairly straightforward job. And it sounds like using poly bushes will help you with that. It’s a little long winded due to having to dismantle half of the front end just to get the wishbone front bolt out, but not a bad job.
The rear bush was really quite a tight press fit though. I actually only used the press to get the rear bush back in. Everything else I managed in my large vice.
I wish I’d have taken more photos for you. I think I read someone’s project thread before I did mine. I’ll see if I can find it.

  36. Here’s the project thread I found very useful when researching for mine.

    https://www.cliosport.net/threads/n...egane-225-trophy-progress-blog.606272/page-18

A big thank you and well deserved credit to the owner of that thread!
I hope he doesn’t mind me posting it. A few of you guys who have been around a while probably know the owner actually. Anyone know if he’s on here?

Actually, If any of you guys haven’t read through that thread then I would definitely recommend it. It’s pretty impressive!

    Hope it helps.
