250 Adjustable Top Mounts with KW V3's?

Discussion in 'Suspension, Brakes, Wheels & Tyres section' started by James B, Jan 22, 2017.

  1. Hi All,

I'm after some advice, and I'm sorry if it's been discussed before (I've found some mention of it but I don't think anyone has gone into the detail of it)

I love the V3's that I've currently got. I'm intending on sending them off for a refurb and when I refit them I would love to pair them up with some adjustable top mounts.

Now I'm aware you need the Clubsports/other brand of coilover to get adjustable mounts with the coilovers, but now there are a few top mounts available for the standard struts and springs, does anyone know if it would be possible to make any of these adjustable mounts fit the V3 struts and springs? Bearing in mind that the top half of the standard mount is used anyway when fitting the V3's ...

Any advice on this would be great! Even if you know somebody who can create something custom

    Cheers,

    James

  2. Bump. Does anybody know?

  3. When I emailed KW about top mounts being used on V3's they said that 'the threaded section on the piston rod is not long enough to accept a top mount and be bolted on securely.' But as you say they take standard mounts fine. I'd be intrigued to know if anyone has tried fitting Silver Projects top mounts to them as they're a direct OEM replacement and fit B14's fine. May be worth getting a pair and finding out as they're only £130 shipped.

  4. Yeah I rang KW today and got the same response, so I then got onto KTEC to see if they were aware of anything and they are hoping to start selling some DNA (Italian company) adjustable top mounts soon, but the guy I spoke to couldn't confirm if they would fit the KW's or not.

So I've spoken to DNA and they are going to check the KW drawing for me tomorrow to see if the parts they can supply me with will fit! So fingers crossed that ends up being a potential option.

But what I will try and do (if I get time) is also get onto Silver Projects and see if they can offer any advice.

Like you say, there must be an option!

I recon the Silver Project ones or AST ones will fit.

Silver projects work with OEM and B14s, Granted they use the standard lower part of the mount, But if your KW's use the standard upper i dont see any reason why they wont fit.

Come in at £150 and they seem decent enough in that if they didn't fit you could probably send them back with no issues.

  6. Just to bump this - I've ordered the silver project ones as I had it confirmed by DNA tuning that they will fit. They can even supply them with updated bearings if you want.

I've just ordered a set of them to see, didn't bother with the uprated bearings as I want to check that they actually fit first, and also plenty of people have used silver project top mounts on other vehicles and they seem to rate them highly!

  7. Well they arrived a couple of weeks ago. They don't fit.

But they will fit standard suspension if anybody wants them? I will do them for the retail but without any postage costs, so you will save.

I've got two days to return them so let me know soon!

  8. What's the issue with fitting them out of interest?

  9. Sorry, should have said.

The bottom of the Silver Project top mount fits perfectly to the top of the bottom half of the standard top mount.

However, it does not fit to the supplied KW 'bottom half' which is solid metal, as opposed to the plastic setup of the standard part. The KW part has different dimensions.

And the damper rod will not fit through the centre of the SP top mount (SP internal diameter is too small)

Also metal on metal will more than likely cause one hell of a noise and then I also cannot be bothered with removing the strut every time I want to change the camber settings so I am just going to return them (or sell them if anybody wants them )

  10. Although I would like to add that you could make them work if you were good at fabricating, and developed a way of separating the metal on metal contact.

To get them to fit the ID of the top mount hole needs to be increased and on the base of the SP top mount the mounting sections need to be ground/filed off and new ones added to fit to the KW top mount.

But by that point it would have been cheaper and easier to go for Clubsports ...

  17. Bump

  18. Do you like var3 on Magane?

  19. Yes I do.. Performed really well at Snett last month and outside tyre wear seems minimal despite no top mounts. I wouldn't have chosen them for track personally though.. I would have gone for clubsports but I understand they weren't yet available when the previous owner purchased.

Bump for a top mount solution otherwise they will come off soon and be up for sale

  20. Could you compare them with cap suspension? They are not softer?
And maybe you have real photos of var3? I can't find it

  21. Cup suspension..?? They are much harder than cup suspension. MUCH harder.. Sorry I don't have any photos
