Hi guys, So I'm getting closer to MOT time with my R26 and on the previous one I had an advisory that both front ball joints were worn. I had this inspected by my local Renault specialist who said there is play in both front hub joints and steering arms - upshot is a quote of £1500 for new hubs, wheel bearings and steering arms. Clearly the work needs doing but its a big outlay so I was wondering if the parts can be sourced for less? I'm not too mechanically minded so it's not a job I'd want to attempt myself. The main issue is the Renault hub assembly at £360 each! Would love some advice on this as to the best course of action. Cheers
You can get a garage to replace parts such as swivel bearings rather than get new hubs. You can buy new lower arms with ball joints and bushes already fitted such as https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/273142333236 for £150. I couldn’t find new Renault OEM lower arms, well the RHS one anyway. I have just bought new TRW ball joints and steering tie rods etc. from Mister Auto on eBay (as cheaper than their app) for about £65 for 2 joints and both tie rods. https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/291568799070 Ball joints and https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/291568830111 and https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/291624260385 for tie rod ends. Inner steering arms can be got from Renault Parts Direct. There’s a post with all the part numbers for a suspension refresh for the R26 on here.
Thanks guys - excuse my ignorance but if I was to go the TRW route would the following be what I need to sort these issues: Ball joints x2: https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/291568799070 Tie Rods x2 (L+R): https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/New-GENU...Tie-Rod-End-RENAULT-SPORT-right-/191562394795 Wheel bearings x2: https://moto-dynamic.com/7701207677-front-wheel-bearing-r-megane-ii-clio-i,3,1339,29552 Then I just need the steering arms - would you be able to link me to a set please? Also am I missing any key components for the overhaul? Sorry for all the questions, as I said I'm not the most mechanically minded. Really appreciate the help, hopefully will save me quite a bit of cash.
Check out the thread in the suspension, brakes, wheels board: OEM equivalent suspension and steering components *links inside* If you are replacing wheel bearings you probably want to replace the swivel bearings https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/283414395545 and swivel bearing 52x45x4 seals https://simplybearings.co.uk/shop/product_info.php?products_id=28167. If you are changing ball joints in the arms you might want to change the two bushes in the arms, either like for like or power flex ones. After that you can change the drop links and ani-twist links if need be but this is in the thread as titled above so have a look at that.
Tie rod ends are handed so get one of each. Track rods https://www.kamracing.co.uk/car-tun...renault-oe-steering-track-rod-rs-225-r26.html and the other links can be got from RPD or Kam Racing.
Is there anywhere you can get new inserts? I have all the bits for a full refresh but not the inserts. Was going to reuse the old ones. I don’t have any steering/suspension issues - am just doing a refresh as it is in 80000miles.
@chappers2000 https://renaulthubbearings.co.uk/ sell the inserts. Yours might be ok if no issues with steering, ive not had to replace an insert yet, but i guess they wear on some that have had steering/hub bearing issues for ages.
