Hello, Going to be tackling this job myself (drive way). I've never done this before but it seems fairly straight forward (although from research the front can apparently be a bit of a **tch). I have the workshop manual with the guide and all the torque settings and also found this video... https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Q-vIQxaUOa8&t The bit at 3:57 though, I understand that he's holding on to the rod whilst undoing the nut and the same again to put it back on but, is that necassary? Can you just undo the nut? Also any hints, tips and well wishes will be greatly appreciated cheers
the location you refer to at 3:57, you need to hold the rod stable with Allen key otherwise the entire rod would simply rotate with the nut you're trying to remove.
This is a better video. It’s in German but you’ll get the idea. It really helped me do mine myself (on my drive) I wouldn’t say it’s difficult, more time consuming as there’s lots to remove. Hardest part for me was compressing the new springs to get them on the strut as the compressors fouled on the wide strut base. Easier if know someone with some floor mounted compressors My tip is have lots of WD40 on tap as you’ll need it to get past the rusty bolts.
Hmmm interesting vid. I thought I'd be clever and turn the subtitles on but they were in German too. So is it easier to take the hub off then?
Well that was a disaster! Got as far as undoing the anti rotation link nut but it was so rusted it seized. I then managed to strip the hex head so I can't even tighten it back up. ****'s sake! I think I'm just going to pay someone to do it lol
It’s a ball ache mate especially if you don’t have the correct tools. Try hitting the next size up hex key into the bolt and see if that works. I gave all the nuts a good coating of wd40 24 hours before.
Changed my springs last weekend first side was ball ache next side piece of piss!!! Little tip so nothing locks up half ways through undoing is soak in WD-40 then use a wire wheel in a drill to clean the rust and gunk off any exsposed thread so they are nice and shiny. As regards to springs compressers not fitting I had the same issue so I compressed the spring against the actuall spring seat it self (probs not the 100% safe but it did the job). Also I found using a bearing puller in the lower arm ball joint very effective as to not damaged the rubber boot.
Sorry for the late reply. Absolute ball ache mate! I had a full blown argument with it much to the neighbors amusement. I tried exactly that, next size up, too, but I'd totally ****ed it unfortunately. Still not fixed.
Cheers for the advice mate. I did give them a quick scrub with a wire brush but, obviously wasn't enough.
If it is currently still stuck half way with the Allen bit f****d you can try cutting off the end of the thread so it is a flat surface then use a grinder to cut a slot in it for a flat head screwdriver piece on a ratchet
It’s theres enough thread showing grab the bolt with some grips and tighten the nut up. If not, cut it off and replace.
