What brand of tyre?

  1. Currently in the process of fitting some springs to my car, having the wheels powder coated and new tyre's. I'm drawn towards the uniroyal rain expert3's as they're known for brilliant grip and handling, what other brands do people recommend? Thanks.

  2. what you looking for?...wet weather performance,or all round.

Yoki ADO8R for excellent dry grip with track ability.
Michelin PS4 for all round ability.
wet weather...what you are looking at,or rainsport 3`s.

  3. PS4 are really good

  4. We're in the cold wet winter months now so probably an all round decent tyre i'd swing towards, rather than somthing like an ad08r. Ps4's are also good but the prices aren't haha.

  5. depends on how you drive..i never scrimp on tyres.
the stopping distance between a cheap tyre and a premium brand is huge.
Rainsport 3`s are pretty sporty for sensible money.
my mate had them on his 360hp integra type R..and they cope reasonably well!

  6. This is true. Realistically I think uniroyals fall between the mid range and branded category which Id be happy with. The cheapest I've found them are on camskill. Are there any other sites which could be cheaper?

  7. not by much, unless you can find a deal on a tyre site.
    i have always used camskill.

  8. Lasted less than any other tyre I’ve ever had although for the 5000ish miles I did like them!

  9. Michelin Pilot Super Sport (MPSS) or MIchelin Pilot Sport 4S (MPS4S). The S is important... as good as the 4 is as a replacement to the 3, it’s not as good as either of the above, or even the previous Pilot Sport 2.

Great all round tyres. Dedicated track tyres are a different matter... but the above would be ok for occasional track too, without the need for a second set of wheels. You’d just be out on track for less time each go so they don’t overheat and get off.

The 4 isn't a replacement to the 3, At all. Its a true successor to the PSS, which in turn was the successor to the PS2. Confusing i know.

The PS3 was more a touring tyre, A modern Pilot Exalto and was quite a poor tyre IMO.

PSS had great grip, But sorely let down by soft sidewalls that ruined them for me. I actually took mine off as i didn't like them due to that.

PS4 or the S if your on 19s is the way to go.

  11. The Michelin pilot sports I know are superior to any other tyre, but my pockets aren't deep enough for those that's why I want to have a go with the rainsport3's, they're a happy medium and a decent grippy road tyre. The car won't be seeing a track as I have a bike for that :-)

  12. have you tried PS4? I think it is worse than pss.

have they fix the soft sidewall issue?

  13. i honestly cant tell any difference when i swopped from pss to ps4.
You need a degree of sidewall flex in a road tyre with how shit our roads are.
Both great road tyres, and cant see any other brand offering the same level of all round ability in its class.

  14. Sorry to say Jamie, but that’s not correct. I know it’s confusing and there has been a lot of speculation all over the internet. The 4S replaces the SS. There are details from Michelin clarifying this too. We had the same confidence soon when the 3 was produced as everyone thought it replaced the PS2, haha. It was all marketing. The PS3 was an OE tyre for many standard cars like Citroen DS’s.

I’ll try and dig something out that clarifies the above. The Super Sport’s even outdo the 4S in some scenarios, as it’s still a little more aggressive.

  15. It’s 4S that have a softer side wall by all accounts too.

  16. In that case mate I’d go for Goodyear Eagle Assymentric after all the Michelin’s, followed by Vredestein Ultrac Vorti’s.

  17. This isn’t a bad review (PSS / 4S)

There was also a Michelin presentation kicking about somewhere too.

  18. My ps4 tyres are definitely softer than my ps2's but I love them.

Comfort improved and they are like a progressive spring you can feel the grip load up when you lean on them. Perfect for road wouldn't use them on track though, too soft.

  19. i thought the 4S is a more track orientated tyre than the 4 hence the`S`
Asi said..i have had both SS and 4 back to back..little to no difference....4 a bit better in the wet

  20. assy £20 a corner more expensive than RS3 ...no terrible, but still 80 notes for someone on a tight budget.

  21. it depends on your driving style. If you like aggressive, off balance driving, you can't love michelins. Bridgestone, Yokos or Vredestein are the way to go

  22. I dont drive like that on the road anymore.
These modern hatches are capable of ridiculous pace from point to point.
If you are pushing hard enough to unsettle the car on the road, then it can easily end up with you without a license or in jail.

Not preaching,as we all like a blast...but i am always looking over my shoulder for pc plod,or up the road for gatso`s/speed camera vans etc...So most of the time i cant be bothered to take the risk.

Really? Then my bad if I'm wrong.

Ime the PS3 is a poor tyre, SS had good level of grip but soft sidewalls and the PS4 is the better tyre. Don't run 19s so havnt tryed the 4S.

The 4 feel the best by far, a lot similar to the old PS2. I'm quite fussy abiut how a tyre feels and always found the SS to be quite unsettled on initial turn in as the sidewall flexed required addition steering input

  24. To be honest I’ve only run my PSS on AWD cars. Have 4’s on the Megane, and as you say the 4S isn’t available in 18’s.

That video I posted is quite informative and gives a view on the difference in build for SS/4S vs the 4. All good tyres for road use really.

  25. To add to the complication I thought the PS4 replaced the PS2. The PS4S replaced the MPSS though they only come in size 19 or larger.

  26. Be careful with F1 assy 2's or 3's. Really soft sidewall on the 2's which ruined the turn in on my Clio 182.
The 3 came near bottom in this year's EVO tyre test.

  27. Had Rainsport one's followed by the two's on my previous car (Astra 2.0 petrol turbo) after Dunlops and Falkens.
They were absolutely superb in damp/wet conditions and never had any aquaplaning at all. More or less stopped the traction control light which flashed easily with the other tyres in wet/damp conditions pulling out of junctions etc, which in the UK is most days .
Sidewalls did feel a bit soft on rare occaisions- especially if carrying some weight- but were more than adequate for my use. Used to get about 8,000 miles fronts - they do seem to be a soft compound . Only bad thing I'd say is I found road noise certainly increases as they wear. Have to say haven't tried the three's yet though.

  28. I've been meaning to get mine changed, had a full on drift round a roundabout this morning (albeit slightly icy).
But think its now a good time to get them changed.
I've had PS2 best by far, PS3 terrible, PS4 currently which are a big improvement on the 3 but not good as the 2.

Not sure what to get now as the PS4 have taken quite a big jump since I last got them.

So looking for recommendations on alternatives. I don't do any track racing but do like to chuck it round country roads every now and then

  29. v105 or s001 imho

  30. In the cold weather even my PS4 tyres are struggling. Ideally I'd buy some winter tyres like I did for my last car but I'm being cheap haha.
