R26 Space Saver - What fits?

Discussion in 'Suspension, Brakes, Wheels & Tyres section' started by BEEFTEC, Jan 25, 2017.

  1. Hi guys,

I've done a search but can't find any definitive answers.

I want to get a space saver for my car to keep in the boot on long trips etc.

Hoping to pick one up from a breakers, but not sure what fits.

I.e. I know Mk3 clio 197/200 have the same PCD, but they also didn't have spares.

Any idea if a space saver off a non sport megane / laguna / clio will fit my R26?

PCD and centre bore size I need it to fit spot on.

I'd like to know too. Be nice to have one alongside the foam for emergencies.

  3. wont fit over front brake anyway full size steel 16" doesn't fir the brembos

so it's either a space saver for the rear only which mean if you puncture at front you need to fit a rear wheel on the front and fit space saver in rear.

second option is get a full size 18" alloy from ebay and use as a spare.

  4. Why not just keep a can of tyre foam in the car?

  5. Because foam never works, I've used foam on 3 different cars and none worked at all.

  6. I got a "17 Space Saver off an Espace on ebay last year. Fits on front and rear perfect. Bit rusty as they are stored outside underneath the Espace but I'm goin to paint it black soon. Definately handy to have!!

  7. Full sized alloy fits. That's what I have. I did have the standard space saver but it's a massive hassle if you get a puncture on the front.
And as mondeoman says foam never ever works and the worst thing is if you use it. 99.9% of garages will then refuse to repair the tyre (if it's saveable)

  8. "17 space saver off an Espace thats got a hardly used tyre is miles cheaper than a full size alloy and fits on the front no problem

  9. Interesting. I've never actually had to use foam but have always kept a can in my cars that I was bothered about saving the 100kg that the spare wheel or space-saver weighed. My Q5 has a foam-pump thingymy as standard, it must work for Audi or they wouldn't have fitted it surely....

  10. I think the standard issue ones are probably OK I've never had to use one of those (if it's the ones I'm thinking of that are fairly big kits etc) but I think they do have a use by date on them. If the tyre was repairable though, no garage will touch it!
The ones you can buy that are just in an aerosol can though are absolutely terrible, never worked and just wrecked the tyre (tried twice in an emergency on different occasions).
I used to be like that in some of my old cars, looking for every last gram of weight saving, but in a road car it's not worth the hassle of not having a spare and saving 15kg that you won't notice!

  11. Thanks. I had never come across any reviews, whether good or bad, of them - I just thought they did what they said on the tin. I can’t remember what make my can is but it’s the usual silver one that sold at Halfords, they surely can’t keep selling them if they don’t work…

I've no boot floor so space is abit of an issue. 17" espace tyre is a shout. Tbh even putting a space saver on for me wouldn't be the end of the world. 5 mins to swap a tyre round. Will look into both later [emoji1360]

  13. Not sure where u are but I've a spare unused space saver if you can collect it?

    It's a 5.5" x 17" steel wheel and needs a 185/60R17 tyre with a C load index.

^^^^^^^^^^ from another website.. will only fit on rear due to caliper..^^^^^^^^^^

  17. Cheers guys, i'll look for an espace wheel. Seems to be plenty on eBay cheaply

I caught the side wall on one of my tyres last year, it went down in seconds. Tried both cans of foam what a complete waste of time. The 2nd one though did put enough air in to limp the 1/2 mile round the industrial estate to a tyre fitters. I think I am going to get a full size spare.

  19. Foam MIGHT just about work on a tiny pinhole puncture but as previous posts state on any normal sized one then foam is a waste of time and again as prev' posts say garages will not repair a foamed tyre. Foam is just a manufacturers cost cutting gimmick.

  20. Thanks guys, I ignorantly just assumed it did what it was meant to do. With regards my Audi foam & pump system - I am 100% certain that they would not put it in a £45k car as a cost cutting measure as I’m guessing it would actually cost more than a basic steel wheel & skinny tyre. The thought they have put into other bits on the cars and also accessories like roof-rails etc. is really surprising therefore I am confident that it will be up to the job if we ever need it. Noted though regarding the Halfords can of foam and I will likely put the space-saver and jack back in at the weekend.

On a separate note, is there a tow-eye point on the front of the car? – I just can’t find one anywhere (MK3)

  21. Picked up an unused espace wheel off ebay for £12, little bit tatty as they're hung under the car on an espace. Going to give it a lick of hammerite and try it for size at the weekend!

I think foam is put in as a weight reduction / fuel saving measure tbh. Much lighter than a wheel, tyre, jack and wheel brace and also means they don't have to design a wheel well into the car.

  22. The foam is a right PITA.
Regardless of who it is supplied by.

Other half had a puncture using my other car and recovery service used the foam (I was abroad before anyone shouts about my manners!).

Still didn't help, completely ruined tyre, took ages to clean the wheel, left some traces on the paint of wheel.

Never again. It's a weight and cost saving measure, not done as a service to the new owner.

No car of mine has a spare, so I rely on recovery service in case something goes wrong.

  23. Any pictures or links to the espace one?

My car came with a full size spare, that leaks air, but no jack or brace!

  24. Quick update - 17" espace space saver fits spot on. Not tried it on the front, but seems to have plenty of clearance. Plus if its ever needed on the front you can swap wheels and put this on the rear if needed.

I paid £12 for one off eBay and it's unused but tatty. Going to give it a coat of hammerite to smarten it up - Comes with a 185 tyre and is rated to 80mph which is good as the skinny space savers are only 50mph max.

Couple of pics - Excuse the state of the car. It received a much needed wash just after!

  25. Definately fits on thhe front

  26. Cool, thought it would as you said but couldn't confirm myself as I didn't try it.

  27. I see most posts on this refer to an R26 Meg. will these Espace wheels fit the Meg RS coupe rear / anyone know ?

  28. I don't think so, Mk3 meganes have a different PCD

  29. Oh well, thanks for that Beef'.

  30. Quick wire brush and a tin of hammerite spray paint and its good to go:

  31. Just need another three now to complete the look although I think I preferred it with all the rust!

I need one of these. Foam is no good when you buckle a wheel and all the air escapes.

  32. I did some googling, and seeing as they have the same PCD and center bore, the 17" space saver out of a Nissan R33/R34 GT-R should fit, at least in the rear. Murano's even came with an 18" space saver!

  33. Would anyone be able to measure the width of the space saver?

Thinking about fitting one to get more space in the boot - but based on the tyre size of 185 vs 225 for a full size that only seems 4cm narrower? Surely a "skinny" wheel must be a bigger difference than that?
