My driver’s door makes a one-time clonking/creaking sound half-way through being opened (and possibly shut), I’ve liberally sprayed lithium grease onto all the hinges and also the bar thing with the notches that goes into the door but it still makes the loud noise. It’s definitely a metallic mechanical noise. The passenger door is fine. Any ideas?? Thanks
mine is doing similar - I get the creaking and no matter how much I spray it it makes no difference - has been getting worse last few months
The bar thing is a check strap and I have had this clonk on almost every car I've owned except the Megane bizarrely. They work loose over time and need replacing as the joint/pin wears out and the bar ends up with loads of play in it. Would lay money on it being that, the French aren't good at check straps.
Thanks, I knew it would have a technical name! Its coincidentally the only car I’ve heard the noise and it only happens on the driver’s side, but then presumably the passenger side has not been used anywhere near as much (by the previous owner). Is the check-strap easy to replace with the door in-situ or is it a door off job or even an interior door panel off job? I definitely don’t have enough time for the former (two young boys!!).
It will be the check strap - reasonably common on the Megane. There are threads on here covering it, if you search, but I've not changed one myself.
Thanks! Ah yes the Search tool, I’m still getting used to this new-fangled Web-chat-room-forum thingy.
Fitted a new check-strap today, was easy enough to do and has solved the clocking noise!! The two rollers on the new strap look to be made out of metal rather than plastic like the old strap therefore perhaps Renault knew there was a problem...
Hi mate, How do you change the check strap on the drivers door? Mine has developed the same issue. Straightforward DIY job?
It was a while ago now, but from memory just remove the interior door panel, unbolt the strap from outside and then the strap can be removed from within the door.
