Brake Cooling

Discussion in 'Suspension, Brakes, Wheels & Tyres section' started by john45bryan, Feb 15, 2014.

  1. Does anyone currently run any brake cooling? Im thinking about creating a duct to help the brakes while on track.

    Any pictures will be appreciated

How did you get on John, enjoy it?

  3. Yeh mate it was really good!

Struggled with braking about 30 mins into the day. By 2 oclock, i had warped my disks and knackered my pads :worried:. I was only doing 3 laps each time, compared to the normal 7/8 laps, as they were bad.

I came in for an hour to let them cool about 2, but when i went back out my steering wheel was shaking. Its safe to say i now need new disks and pads. I also need to vent the brakes i think, but im not 100% yet.

Jesus thats not good, at least you enjoyed it though. How about running some ducting into the bottom grille on the bumper?

  5. Thats what im thinking about doing tomorrow, as well as building a boot floor. I've stripped the rear seats & boot out, so i need to make the floor.

My friend got me some carpet from work, so i can get it all built tomorrow.

As for the brake ducts i'll have to have a look tomorrow, to see where i can run them.

You'll struggle john, the problems I'm the pad and disk there mate. Ring me tomorrow. I'll explain better that way.

  7. any news on this? would love to get some ducting into my brakes to help cooling. sound like you need the discs skimming and fresh pads due to the pads over heating and glazing the face of the discs.

  8. We're still working on it, will be running feeds from the fog lights through the arch liners.

  9. What kind of vented discs are you running?

  10. Jonny just about he best set up for the megane for brakes is HC plain discs with DS 1.11 pads up front and DS 2500 pads in therear

  11. I've got a 330mm disc kit for the front and r26r discs for the rear and already have Bluestuff pads in stock for other cars that happen to be same size as the Meg. Bluestuffs might just work on the front of the Megane. The rears work well on the heavier Fords but the fronts aren't so great when pushed very hard on a high power car but on the lighter Megane.

Anyhow, that wasn't the reason i asked about discs. I am currently producing proper brake cooling kits for the Ford and BMW scene and am considering a solution for the Megane but disc choice is important because straight vane discs don't draw air from ducts, so you are left relying on the air ram effect.

  12. I need to get the pipe and figure it all out, there doesnt look to be much room. It may have to be a deflector plate job. I dont want the wheel catching the duct :/

  13. I had a quick look yesterday and there's plenty of room for a 76mm duct. However the hub carrier will need to be drilled and tapped to support the duct cowling because the Megane doesn't have any disc guard mounting points on the swivel hub like other cars often do. I'll have a proper look next time my disc is off. I might mock something up at the same time.

  14. Did you follow up on this MonkeyRider, would one of your in production kits swap over onto the megane hubs even if drilling was required?

I have a TD coming up in July and I have a feeling the brakes will be the weak point, I dont want to go away and ruin 600 pounds worth of brakes on the first day.

  15. Possibly fabricate a deflector plate to the wishbone to throw air up and into the disk area; a bit like what Renault put on the Clio Williams if anyone remembers those?!

    Paul

  16. I have a couple of sets of deflector plates from the clio cup cars but I would think with the swivel hubs you will need something attached to the upright.

I will have to have a look as I only just got the car tbh.

  17. I will take another look at this now I have a spare set of hubs off the car. What size discs do you have? I'm wondering if I need to cater for different sizes.

    Regards,
    Jonny

  18. I only have the standard r26 discs, not sure on the size as im new to these things.

  19. You can use the brake mounting bolts to attach a duct which connects to pipe

  21. Did anyone ever make any progress with this?

  22. I have this on my agenda as well. Based on my analysis the best bet would be a set of deflector plates and use the caliber bolts to mount that to the swivel hub. Have the idea in my mind, is just that needs to find time to get alive...unless someone has more time than me.

  23. Sounds like a good idea to me! I'm interested to buy something if available, but not experienced enough to help much technically in this aspect!

  24. I've got a mk3. Will be looking at this next year to see what can be done

  25. Anyone with a mk3 noticed a difference after removing the flaps in the front wheel arches?

  26. I removed them from new so I never got the chance to compare. Obviously no benefit on the road. I asked at work and was told that the benefit would be quite small on track too, at least compared to proper ducting.

  27. Seems like a missed opportunity from Renault to install some proper ducts.

  28. Where? .... Got a photo?

The only brembos you get on the 182 are retrofits from the MK3 clio or Megane Mk2 so they will work, assuming there is enough clearance with the hub setup etc

  30. Interesting. At £85 I might take a post-xmas gamble on them!

  31. Just in front of the wheels, hanging from the bumper - 3 rivets per side

I have contacted him through his site, you never know someone may have already tried it but they don't frequent forums. May also just do it anyways as for me if I do more track days in this car brake cooling is right at the top of my next to do mod list.

  33. I'm interested to see how well these work and how they fit. Would deffo be interested in them.

Would need to look oem from the front bumper for me though.

  34. Surely if the ones linked above done fit, someone could take measurements of the brembos and get a engineering company to make some.

Makebe a job for when I strip the hub down...

I got a reply from him, he has confirmed they are for the Clio mk3 197/200 calipers as we thought. He has offered to supply a set for trial fitting which I am opening up to all you guys as one of you is likely much more in need of resolving this issue at the moment than me (long story, decided to go racing again and make use of the race car sat in my garage the past 3 years).

  36. I'll have a go - are you able to put me in touch with him? Feel free to PM :-)

  37. I'll be fitting my new discs over the next week so happy to have a look also or at least take some photos.
