Rear pad change tool?

Discussion in 'Suspension, Brakes, Wheels & Tyres section' started by git-r, Nov 9, 2016.

  1. It's been too many years since I last changed a set of pads with single pot calliper!

Can anyone recommend the tool I need to wind the piston back in - does it have a name?

Also, any how to guides? Found some on the 225 so guessing my 250 would be similar.

    Thanks

PS the oe cup pads have done 4 full track days - £100 for front and back from Renault Wolverhampton- bargain

they are exactly the same to do, i did mine with a pair of pliers, but if you want the proper tool it's called a "brake rewind tool"

Can get them cheap enough on ebay, think I paid 20 quid for my set paid for its self several times over, such a handy thing to have

  4. Got mine for about £7 on eBay so they're pretty dirt cheap and a solid piece of kit. Weighs loads!

  5. Thanks lads - much appreciated!

  6. Make sure you buy a rewind tool that winds CLOCKWISE !!!
You'll also need an E16 ring spanner and a socket for the hub nut.

  7. I have two. One from eBay and another from ECP. The latter was an emergency purchase and was about £15 in a 50% sale. The eBay one was about £7 and is much better.

  8. Thanks mate, I definitely don't have an e16 ring spanner! Er, what socket for the hub - another funny fitting one?

  9. Ebay is your friend!! Buy the ring spanner.. saves chewing up a nut and getting you stuck... have a look here:

Hub nut, there are 2x sizes unfortunately, Newer ph2's have a 36mm hub nut. Mines did in any case.

You don't need a ring spanner to change the pads....

  11. You don't need to remove the hub nut either, unless of course you are changing the discs.

If you are only replacing the pads then you only need the rewind tool.

  12. And a 13mm spanner to undo the caliper bolts.

  14. Grrrrr, long story but I've failed... the story of my life!

So, I def have a 13mm spanner, various pliers but no rewind tool.

    Ian, any words of wisdom?

So I need to wind it in clockwise.

Are fronts just a case of knocking out the pins with a punch and hammer or will I need any special tools?

    Thanks again

  15. Rears wind in clockwise, yes.

Fronts are a piece of cake, unless the pins are seized. Mr pinks pins are a worthwhile investment. It takes me longer to jack it up and get the wheel off / on than it does to change the pads.

Hammer and a punch is all you need really although a pair of pliers will help to pull em out and something to push the pistons in for new pads.

  16. Thanks buddy, much appreciated.

Fingers crossed I'll manage to rewind the piston with pliers at the back.

it will be a bit of a faf, but tap the piston in with a hammer , turn clockwise with the ends of the pliers located in the dimples, then turn and push at the same time and repeat tap, push and turn :sunglasses:

  20. Thanks Ian!

    I acutually did it!

Started at 12 today having picked up the rewind tool then by 12:40 I still hadn't finished the back left! It took me a while to figure out the way the tool worked but by 13:35 front and back were all done - very pleased with myself

Thanks again for all the help lads, Brands tomorrow, will report back with vids
