Only on cold starts and goes way after 30 seconds I'd say. Get a tapping sound. I've heard it's due to oil from other posts but I use Petronas 5W-40 3000 AV, should I change to something like Castrol Edge or Shell Ultra? Is this doing any damage?

Oh well the cars only done 37k miles and had it changed at 24k so I don't think it's that? Been doing it for months.
I've heard it's tappets or oil?

  6. Do you have a receipt for it being done, it normally only gets changed if you request it

Yeah have the receipt, owner was very anal about stuff and kept on top of stuff.
Doesn't Jamie have knowledge of this?

  9. Change the oil for some Titan race pro s with Ester properties. That will sort your cold tapping.

Is the tapping doing any damage? Because if not I'll wait for 6 months when my change is due, oil is pretty new.

Dephaser solenoid, Try changing that first. Few have had this issue and changing the solenoid sorts it.

Its located next to Cyl 1 coilpack.

Ooo that's quite expensive, I'll give it a go next month.
So any damage being done so you think or just an annoyance.

    Its not that expensive lol.
Its just noisy, Id imagine it would eventually kill something though

Not overly expensive but more than I'd thought, I'll give it a go. So you reckon something like Castrol or Shell would be better than Petronas? I thought I picked a good oil as that's what KTec suggest.

Renault spec Elf oil is more than upto the job and is cheap as well.

Might have a look at that then, I'll try oil first then I'll change that sensor.

Mine taps on cold start, it had a new dephaser in December too. oIt goes when it's warm so doesn't worry me much

I just worry after my 225 blew up with what seemed like a small issue.

I'll try oil but me and my mate checked over it all today and he told me don't worry it's fine even if it is the tappets which it probably is.

Is that oil definitely correct before I buy it? Seems there are slightly different variants of it.

  23. Yeah it's 5/40 all good

    Cool will go for it.

  25. The solenoid can be had for a lot cheaper then Renault charge. Google Search pn:
    8200642783
    A quick search shows it’s a Delphi unit and it’s about £50

  26. Just go race mate. The shell stuff is just standard oil. You need ester oil.

Is the Delphi unit any good though?

  28. The original one in your car is a Delphi I believe

So before I get one, is the thing next to coil 1 held in by the same bolt?

  32. Renault disagree with you, but what do they know

Yeah seems like conflicting opinions here, some say the more expensive ester oil is better whereas some say just use what Renault say. Not sure.

    Anyway, is this the part?

  34. Renault spec oil is completely safe and cheap. You don't need the race oil. Only time I'd get race oil is if the car was on track a lot, in which case it will work better than standard. Shell helix or Elf (fully synth) is completely okay. I personally use Shell Helix but both are approved and will cause no issues providing you don't initially overfill like I did

What's the issue with Petronas then? It's fully synthetic and 5W-40, not like it's a cheap oil. Just seems like Shell/Castrol/Elf will be the same.

  36. To my knowledge, yes they should work pretty much the same as long as viscosity etc are the same. Not sure if the better brands put in less additives or more, which would explain the differences (if any). Personally I'd always go with manufacturers recommended ones as they know more about the engine than we do (so Shell or Elf), unless it was a dedicated track car where it would be better to change.

Hmm okay well worth a try.
Is that the correct part in the photo above anyone?

  38. Yes the part above is the dephaser solenoid. The standard oil is perfectly fine, but the race oil will help better with the cold tap
