265 Noises!

Discussion in 'Mechanical - Engine, Gearbox, Exhaust etc' started by massivewangers, Mar 28, 2017.

  1. Since buying my 265, I've noticed a couple of odd noises. The car has a warranty, but it's a bit of a trek back to the garage, so wanted to try and identify them before going any further.

First, the brake pedal squeaks if you come off it quickly. This was apparent on the test drive. I asked them to fix it, they said they had, but it's back. It's a minor but annoying problem. Is this a common issue? If I can fix it easily myself, it saves the faff of taking the car back to them.

Second, when pulling away, as you lift the clutch, there is sometimes a very slight knock. It didn't do this on the test drive which is a bit annoying. What is it likely to be? I know so little about these cars so wouldn't know where to start. If it's a more major issue, I can take the car back but, if it's something simple and cheap, I will likely just save myself the time of driving back to the dealer to get them to look at it and sort it myself.

So, what are your thoughts chaps?

  2. My brake pedal did the same and although not the end of the world became dealt irritating. I got Mick at Diamond Motors in long Eaton to have a look and he just tightened the fixings and lubricated the mechanism. No more squeaking.

As for the the knock that could be the ball joints that are a common issue but can now be easily replaced so maybe worth a look.

Whereabouts are you as you maybe close to one of the renault specialists that could take a look, advise and then you'd have some ammo to go back to the dealers with.

  3. I suspected that might be the case for the pedal. Probably not worth taking it back for that, so will take a look and see if I can lubricate it.

I did wonder about ball joints, as obviously it's a common issue, but the car has only 12k, so it seems a bit extreme. The noise almost seems like it's coming from closer to the pedal, though that is hard to diagnose!

  4. Minor update, following another day's (albeit short) commute. On reflection, I think it is a suspension knock. Is there anything I can do to test it and try to see where it is coming from? Car seems to drive fine. Steering feels a little dead around centre sometimes I suppose, can't remember if others I've driven have felt like that.

The knock only seems to occur when pulling away, stopping and on small bumps at low speed occasionally. About to email the guy from the dealer and inform them.

That does have the same sort of symptoms as when the swivels are on their way out. Is there a knock or creak when you add some lock either way at a stand still? Any wandering while driving particularly over rougher Road surfaces?

Or it could be something as simple as a drop link or anti rotation link, its hard to tell as there are so many things on them that can cause knocks

  6. Thanks Jamie, appreciate your help. I'll have a play tomorrow and see what happens. Not driven with any gusto it on any really rough surfaces yet so will see how it reacts.

12k miles seems kinds of low for swivels to be on their way out, but I guess it partly depends on what kind of life it had before I got it.

  7. Like jamie said, could be alot of things, but the knock sounds like to me like the lower arm link, had one go on me old clio 197, same symtoms as yours and even feel it through the pedals, wheres with the hubs balljoints on the megane i didnt feel it through the pedals as such. Pretty easy to identify if there knackard, will have excess movement in the joints.

  8. Yeah it's proving hard to pinpoint. Driving to work this morning, it perhaps sounds like it's coming from the front right, but hard to be sure.

I emailed the sales guy from the dealer last night and, as it's quite a big chain of franchises, he's said I can take it to any of their group, so just pursuing that now. Supposed to be driving to Germany on the 12th of April, so fingers crossed for a quick resolution...

  9. Take the drivers side front wheel off, and check for play in any of the links on the suspension/hub/wishbone etc, they should be quiet firm. When they check mine on the clio is was proper loose at its balljoints.

  10. I could do that, but I might let the dealer do it instead lol. Just waiting for a call back from my nearest branch to see what they can do. Hopefully it will be sorted easily enough.

  11. Just got the car back from the dealer today. They fitted new drop links. The knock is still there...Joy. It's been a customer service nightmare up to this point.

Think I might tell them I want a specialist to look at it. The guy claimed he couldn't hear it knocking, checked everything and the only thing he thought were even remotely suspect were the drop links. Convenient as they're probably the cheapest to replace...
