R26 Modification

Discussion in 'Mechanical - Engine, Gearbox, Exhaust etc' started by Steve r26, Dec 5, 2017.

  1. Hi all,

So I want my r26 to sound better, it’s completely standard at the moment. Was thinking of getting a Milltek exhaust. Any idea’s let me know.

Also if I was to have it decatted is that illegal?

    Thanks

  2. Removing the cat is illegal. If the car came with a cat from the factory, it has to remain. Of course that doesn't stop people from removing them!

The most cost effective way to get a bit more noise is to remove either the middle or rear silencers. I'm not sure which is the preferred option on the MK2, centre or rear, but it should unleash a bit more noise and is much cheaper than a stainless steel system.

  3. So it wouldn’t be illegal to remove the middle or rear silencers?

    No.

My preference is the mid chop but others prefer rear chop.

  5. If you are not going to remove the cat, then remove both box's, i had a straight through Miltec but still had the cat fitted and it was only around 90db measured at trackdays.
Removed the cat and it went up to 119bd

  6. Alright thanks

  7. The miltec system is a 2.75" system, why not go for a 3" system?! I've got a full 3" turbo back, with a 200 cell sports cat and it sounds great! It's got a few other mods, but tick over sounds nice and throaty, while giving it the beans through the rev range sounds great. And then, the pops and bangs on the over run always makes me grin! Worth every penny!

  8. Where would I get all that from?

  9. And a decent induction kit makes all the difference regarding how it sounds!

  10. I got mine from ktec racing, they're based in Dorset. They've got a good site online. Great for parts, but I won't be using them again for any work, especially mapping! If you want a remap, go to RS Tuning or Engine Dynamics.

    Is that the one

  12. Yep. It's worth going for the full turbo back system with the sports cat, as the standard cat is very restrictive regarding exhaust gas flow. Or better still, go for the 3" decat instead of the sports cat, that'll give you the best sound/performance, but you'll need it mapped and it won't pass the emission test during any MOT! That's why I went for the full system including the sports cat. It sounds great, and no problems with MOT, and realistically not much of a drop in performance.

  13. I have always heard that a car will not pass the emissions test without a cat - but I can assure you that it can!
I have a full 3" turbo back system, without a cat (the previous owner had this fitted) and it passed the mot emissions.
My car has been mapped by RST - maybe they have leaned out the map at idle and that has something to do with it?

  14. It won't pass a proper MOT!

  15. Mine was mapped by Paul at RST too. I asked him about decatting it, his reply was that it wouldn't pass an MOT, and a sports cat was the best option, unless I was going to swap a decat for cat/sports cat just for the MOT.

  16. MOT or otherwise, it's still illegal without a cat. You'd need an anal copper or DVSA type to look under the car and work it out, but I couldn't be bothered with it myself. To each his own though.

  17. What's the difference between an MOT and a 'proper MOT' ?
It passed the emissions and everything was done properly. The gas analyser was put into the exhaust and my car passed on the emissions.

  18. I honestly didn't think a car would pass the emission test without a cat. Fair one mate! I'd love to know what's been done to yours because I'd get shot of my cat immediately if it would pass the test without it! What other mods have you got?

    That's the MOT cert.
I only have the full exhaust system and mapped to 270 bhp.
I wasn't sure if it would pass but I thought I'd try it because it would be a PITA refitting the original cat or trying to get a sports cat made to fit.
    I was pleasantly surprised!

  21. I'm now seriously tempted to stick a decat on mine and see what happens!

  23. The previous owner had the car mapped twice by RST. First was a basic remap that brought it to approx 260bhp and then after he had the CGR exhaust system fitted with decat he had the map tweaked and it made 274bhp.

  24. Nice! I've gone a little further with uprated intercooler, 630 injectors, obviously the 3" full exhaust, r26r clutch and SMF, forge dump valve, induction kit and a 250 turbo. Mapped at RST and capped at 302bhp due to standard engine internals. Going to forge the engine early next year, but very definitely thinking of a decat now ASAP! Any more plans for yours?

  25. The sound your car should make with a K-Tec turbo back exhaust:

  26. my old impreza was full turbo back and passed emissions was suprising at the time as didnt think a car with a decat could do it until then. However as mentioned by "massivewangers" if your car came with a cat from factory it would be an mot fail to not have one at mot time regardless if it passes emissions.

  27. The car can pass emisions but its still illegal. Its ilegal to remove the cat if it came with it from factory. So anyone can fail you on that.

  29. Good plan. In the process of doing mine. I've got Cooksport springs fitted but should've had new shocks done at the same time!
